We are starting up in-person sing arounds, but Golden Link will still be hosting virtual sing-arounds on Zoom.

Virtual sing arounds actually provide some advantages over in-person sing arounds as well. We‘ve seen participation from people around the United States and around the world. Even for people who live close by, sometimes travel to our in-person sing arounds can be an impediment to attending, especially on work nights. So, due to the success of the current Zoom sing arounds, we plan to continue the virtual sing arounds in addition to the in-person sing arounds even when things return to normal. This would allow many more people to participate than we see in our in-person sing arounds.

Jan 15 (Tue): virtual sing around, Leader: David Russell
Jan 22 (Tue): virtual sing around, Leader: Janice Hanson
Jan 29 (Tue): virtual sing around, Leader: Sue Hengelsberg

On Sunday afternoons, the Hostel Café in Portland, Oregon provides a friendly setting for this TrailJams Irish traditional tune session. TrailJams is a music community focused on making acoustic music together outside for the enjoyment of the musicians and of people passing by. The cozy café makes a great place to keep the music going in the winter. In better weather, the tune playing moves out to the café’s courtyard. Guests of the Hostel Café and the adjoining Northwest Portland Hostel are likely to settle at one of the nearby tables to enjoy the music.

COVID Policy:
Please be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 if you are joining this session — that is a request, not a requirement.

Tony Becker of San Jose, California and Mark Wallis of Gloucester, England host this trans-atlantic session for all interested parties on Wednesdays, at 8:00 PM UK time. For American visitors, please note we are now all on standard ‘winter‘ time, so that is 3:00 PM Eastern or 12:00 PM Pacific in the USA.

Open to all who play traditional Irish music and It has the obvious limitations of Zoom in that only one musician can play at a time but we go round the ‘room’ and take it in turns - no pressure though and the baton can be passed if you just want to listen. We just play for a couple of hours.

On a good day we have a variety of instruments from pipes to melodeon, banjo to fiddle and it can be a good way to pick up tunes. It is very friendly and we welcome everyone. The only criterion is we try to stick to Irish traditional.

Master button accordion player John Whelan hosts a free, live “Taking Time” slow session on Zoom. The session starts at 2:30 pm Pacific time, lasts for about one hour, with a 30 minute break, and starting the Taking Time Slow Session at 4 pm Pacific.

Starting Mar 27 (Wed) 2024, we will be back where we started in 2020.

Players and listeners of all levels are very welcome to enjoy playing or hearing favorite tunes at a moderate tempo, along with the all-important warmth of connection that shared music brings into our lives, even — or rather, especially — now.

This is also a great opportunity for learning new tunes, as everybody but the session leader (John) will be muted while they play. Unlike an in-person session you can noodle along to your heart’s content, and nobody will ever know unless you tell them.

John sends out the Zoom link and tune list to his newsletter subscribers every week, usually on Tuesday evening (Pacific time). Please make sure to sign up for his email newsletter, on his website, using the link below. That is all you need to do — no separate sign-up process required!

Instructor Avery Hill has been teaching music in Portland for 10 years and is always excited to invite new musicians into the fold (though she would say you’ve always been a musician!). River City Folk is an engaging mix of live performance, interview, and recordings. Hosted by veteran singer-songwriter Tom May, each program features a folk artist or group from across North America who performs live in the studio. Through Tom‘s interviews with the artists, and recordings that have influenced them, the listener is entertained by a unique perspective on the living tradition that is folk music.

Scheduled Tapings:
Feb 24 (Sat): Taping at Artichoke Music at 2 pm, featured performer Arietta Ward. There are people who know how to take the tragic and make it magic. Arietta Ward is one of those people. The eldest daughter of the late, legendary Janice Scroggins, the sudden loss of her mother became the catalyst to solidifying her space on the stage – a space that Arietta, commonly known as Mz. Etta, has already occupied for years.

** All tapings begin at 2 pm - seats first come, first served. Admission free, but contributions to the Artists accepted. Snacks and Drinks available! **

You can listen on www.folkmusicnotebook.com on Saturday at 4 pm PT and again at 1 pm PT on Sunday.

Join us in person for a Spring weekend of singing, jamming, learning and sharing at Portland FolkMusic Society‘s annual Singtime Frolics retreat. You will spend two nights there in a very beautiful spot. There will be events all day - and we will post the schedule here shortly before the weekend begins. We‘ll eat together, and the food is good. If you want to take a break from music, you can do whatever you like, including walking on trails overlooking the Columbia Gorge.

We are very pleased to have Kenny Feinstein as this year‘s guest artist. He will offer a short concert and a couple of workshops, and will generally be available to the participants to talk about whatever. Kenny has roots in the Pacific Northwest: he earned a music degree from the University of Oregon.

Cost:
Bunks in shared rooms: $225
Double private rooms: $295/per person
Single private rooms: $495

We want everyone to be able to afford Singtime and there is a scholarship fund for the bunks and double private rooms - thanks to contributions from participants in past years. If you would like a scholarship, you will find a place to ask for it on the registration form.

And, if you are able to contribute to the scholarship fund, you‘ll find a place to do that also on the registration form.

COVID Policy:
For people who are vaccinated, COVID is much less dangerous than it was two years ago. But it‘s not over, and we also know that some of the people who want to come to Singtime may be particularly vulnerable to COVID.

We require that everyone be vaccinated with at least one booster shot. Then we ask you to take a test on Friday, the first day of Singtime. Finally, we ask you not to come if you are symptomatic.

Feb 5 (Tue): virtual sing around, Leader: Jeff Stewart
Feb 12 (Tue): virtual sing around, Leader: Nikki Roosa
