Tony Becker of San Jose, California and Mark Wallis of Gloucester, England host this Transatlantic session for all interested parties on Wednesdays at 8:00 PM UK time. For American visitors, please note we are now all on standard ‘winter‘ time, so that is 12:00 PM Pacific in the USA.

Open to all who play traditional Irish music and It has the obvious limitations of Zoom in that only one musician can play at a time. But we go round the ‘room’ and take it in turns - no pressure though and the baton can be passed if you just want to listen. We just play for a couple of hours.

On a good day we have a variety of instruments from pipes to Melodeon, banjo to fiddle and it can be a good way to pick up tunes. It is very friendly and we welcome everyone. The only criterion is we try to stick to Irish traditional.

Master button accordion player John Whelan hosts a free, live “Taking Time” slow session on Zoom. The session starts at 2:30 pm Pacific time, lasts for about one hour, with a 30 minute break, and starting the Taking Time Slow Session at 4 pm Pacific.

Starting Mar 27 (Wed) 2024, we will be back where we started in 2020.

Players and listeners of all levels are very welcome to enjoy playing or hearing favorite tunes at a moderate tempo, along with the all-important warmth of connection that shared music brings into our lives, even — or rather, especially — now.

This is also a great opportunity for learning new tunes, as everybody but the session leader (John) will be muted while they play. Unlike an in-person session you can noodle along to your heart’s content, and nobody will ever know unless you tell them.

John sends out the Zoom link and tune list to his newsletter subscribers every week, usually on Tuesday evening (Pacific time). Please make sure to sign up for his email newsletter, on his website, using the link below. That is all you need to do — no separate sign-up process required!

Songwriting workshop led by Ken Gaines sponsored by the Portland FolkMusic Society (PFS). This workshop is part of a group of four in-depth songwriting sessions for a discounted fee of $165 plus a processing fee of 4.97 (a total of 169.97). The fee for each individual workshop is $45.00 plus a $1.92 processing fee to cover bank charges (a total of $46.92).

Each session is 2.5 to 3 hrs long. Attendees must bring their instruments, paper, and something to write with.

March 10 - Session 1: "A Place to Start" Most of us involved in writing have "great ideas" about the songs we‘d like to write but just can‘t seem to get started. This workshop is especially helpful for those just beginning to write their own songs.

March 24 - Session 2: "Opening Lines" One the most important aspects of writing songs is establishing the listener‘s interest at the very beginning of the song, both musically and lyrically. This workshop will explore a bit of both. Then participants will work on one of more solutions of their own and present them during the latter part of the class.

April 7 - Session 3: "How to Get Out of Your Beautiful Rut" After a while we all tend to write the same type of song and while they may be successful, they become our "beautiful rut." This seminar/workshop takes the participants back to the basic music elements of songwriting and teaches a structured approach, bringing variety into newer songs - an approach that will last a lifetime of writing.

April 21 - Session 4: "The Power of Contrast" What would light be without shades of darkness or the dark without the light? This workshop makes participants aware of and learn how to build power and contrast into both individual songs and an entire body of work, and provides ways to present those songs in performance.

Guitar, fiddle, ukulele, bodhran, harmonica and breathtaking vocal harmonies – Music can bring people together in unexpected ways. That’s certainly the case for Kathryn Claire and Margot Merah. Growing up on opposite sides of the world, you can expect them to never have met. And yet they did, in the fall of 2013, in a small Irish pub in Amsterdam. The musical connection was instant. Their love of songwriting, traditional music, folk and harmony singing not only brought them together: it took them all over the world. Potluck 6:30 pm, show 7:30 pm, Suggested donation is $20-$25 in general - pay what you can. All income levels welcome. To RSVP for a concert or to ask questions, you can use the form on the website or send an email to abbiew*(at)*froggie.com. We invite you to make a voluntary donation of $1 or more for the live streaming portion of the show. 100% of the streaming tips go to the artists! COVID Policy: Masks not required, but you are invited wear one if you prefer! We have HEPA Filters and open windows. Contact: Abbie Weisenbloom / abbiew*(at)*froggie.com / www.froggie.com Kathryn Claire is based in Portland, OR. She plays violin, guitar and ukulele, has a crystal clear voice and writes songs that are honest, poetic and profound. Each song is imbued with an energy and electricity that you can feel, and she has the ability to move seamlessly between genres. Margot Merah is based in Amsterdam, Netherlands. She is a real ‘storyteller’, exactly what the folk tradition is all about. Margot’s music is comforting, hopeful and melancholic. Her songs tell about life, simple and small, with an eye for detail and the bigger picture.

We open up a "room" on Zoom at 6 pm Pacific Time every Saturday evening. We start singing at 6:30 pm and we keep it going until the last person leaves. Feel free to come in anytime, and stay as long as you like. We run it kind of like a physical song circle. Everyone who wants to can sing once, and then we’ll do another round, and just keep going around as long as you like. Of course, it is totally fine to just listen and some people do. For more information, go to the heading ‘Song Circles‘ on this drop down menu.

Live music on the patio, free. Every fourth Sunday, we welcome How Long Jug Band!

Inspired by the great jug bands of the 1920’s and 30’s, the How Long Jug Band blends kazoos, washboards and jugs seamlessly with conventional guitars, mandolins and banjos. While they sometimes slip a modern song into the mix, the How Longs mostly draw from early blues, ragtime and jazz, digging into obscure songs to find lyrics and arrangements that are too good to be forgotten.
