Although it may look like a toy or appear superficially similar to a recorder, the tinwhistle or pennywhistle is capable of all kinds of wonderful music and emotive depth and is highly versatile in its own right. Played by people of all ages, it is used by both amateurs and virtuoso professionals, alike. This class will start with the basics of the pennywhistle: scales, breath control, bedrock ornamentation and technique, slides and bends, tongue technique and more.

Tunes for All Humans/All Instruments! The idea behind this class is very simple: give you two to three new tunes a week and enlarge the amount of tunes you can play and share with other musicians. Tunes will be broken down carefully and into bite-sized pieces to make them easy to pick up by ear. Then we will play the tunes slowly and relaxed, giving your muscle memory time to truly learn the tune! No more only half remembering a tune at a jam or wishing you could play that one you heard at the session but just did not have time to record or memorize!

Soldier Songs and Voices provides free songwriting workshops and guitar and voice instruction to veterans of all eras. We believe that everyone has a story to tell and that telling it in song is a path to a happier and healthier life. Loaner guitars are available. Previous musical experience and skill are not required. Just bring your curiosity and willingness to unleash your creativity. For the foreseeable future classes meet online. This is a class for people who love to sing and would like to get better at it, in a new Zoom format that incorporates the essence of those participatory, learning experiences with her new class, “Sing More Better.” Taught in the oral tradition, we’ll use sing-along and call and response formats with easy, fun songs from around the world to help you learn breath control, pitch, harmony, new repertoire and lift our spirits while we are lifting our voices.

Herga at The Castle is a folk and acoustic music evening, with roots going back to 1963.

However, we have restarted online singarounds using Zoom, now on the second Monday of each month.

Note that this meeting runs independently of the live folk club, which runs in parallel at The Castle, Harrow-On-The-Hill.

Jazz up your uke playing skills (and chords) with this “easy” version of Tracy’s popular Swing/Gypsy Jazz/Blues course. This fun term is all about jazz classics(and a few Latin classics)! All levels are welcome to join, some previous experience is recommended.

This is all about having fun strumming, singing and developing a repertoire of classic swing songs. We will use basic chords and some fancy chords. Tracy will explain and demystify the “jazz” chords. Students will no longer be confused by all those fancy chord names! You will also learn how to create intros and endings and a few jazzy licks, too!

Three of Hawai‘i’s leading award-winning performers and musicians — Lehua Kalima (of Na Leo), Shawn Pimental, and Kawika Kahiapo have joined forces to form Kulaiwi and create music that springs from their Native Hawaiian roots, $25 advance/$30 door, doors open at 7.

Kulaiwi means “land of my ancestors”. With soaring vocals, island harmonies and a folk vibe, along with an easy-going charisma and witty banter, they are committed to telling the stories of Hawai’i – the land and the people – from the indigenous point-of-view. Joined by bass player Joe Berinobis for some performances.

Accompanied by award-winning hula dancer Pono Fernandez, who is also an educator and ethnomusicologist, they create an evening that represents Hawai‘i today, while remaining mindful of their deep emotional connections to their roots.

The streets of Portsmouth will ring with the music of the sea. Singers and musicians wander the sidewalks downtown, and the sounds of sea shanties and forebitters waft through the doorways of nearly a dozen venues all within a block or two of Market Square. The Portsmouth Maritime Folk Festival is an annual celebration of the city’s rich maritime heritage, which dates back to the original English settlement in 1630 and continues today in the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, across the Piscataqua River in Kittery, and with maritime businesses on both sides of the river. Sea shanties, the rhythmic work songs that helped sailors coordinate their efforts while raising or lowering sails and anchors, recall the whalers and other wooden ships that were built along the Piscataqua and sailed out of Portsmouth in the 19th century.

Every Saturday, 9 am to noon, the best of traditional and contemporary bluegrass and old time music, and information about local shows and festivals!

Clawhammer Banjo is fun to learn, comfortable to play, and great for any age. You can play fiddle tunes, use chords to sing songs, or just have fun figuring out your own music. We’ll learn how to tune the banjo, how to bum-ditty, we’ll even learn scales and chords! No musical experience is necessary. We’ll start small and add a little more each class, by the end you’ll be playing three tunes.

Learn the skills of playing traditional Irish music in a group and, along the way, pick up some great tunes. This class provides a semi-structured and supportive environment in which to explore the vast repertoire of jigs, reels, and what-have-you, with the ultimate goal of sharpening your listening skills. All tunes are learned by ear, either in class or from the CD each student receives at the beginning of the session. For advanced-beginning and intermediate players of traditional Irish instruments - fiddle, flute, accordion, whistle, banjo, concertina, guitar, mandolin, harp, bouzouki, etc.

This class will look at the bedrock fundamentals of accompanying the traditional music of Ireland and the British Isles. You will learn to back reels, jigs, slip jigs, hornpipes and polkas. We will look at alternate tunings, multiple styles of strumming, picking patterns, rhythm and syncopation, hand dampening techniques and dynamics, moving bass lines, modal chords, counter-point and much more. Also useful for singer/songwriters, Old-Timey/Folk musicians or those who just want to try something new on the guitar! We will study some of the history of the guitar in traditional music and discuss some of the techniques these players have innovated.

It’s time to get together again (virtually) and make music. Every fourth Saturday, Two Way Street Coffee House and Plank Road Folk Music Society will host another wonderful country & western virtual sing-around and you’re invited to sing and/or play along with us!

Led by Plank Road’s own Bob O’Hanlon, bring your voice and instrument, grab your cowboy boots and Stetson hat, and prepare for a good old time.

Since the late 1960s a uniquely Irish version of the Greek bouzouki has become commonplace in traditional music far beyond Ireland and the British Isles. At the same time, interest in other larger mandolin-family instruments like the octave mandolin or the cittern (usually with 10 strings) has increased all over the world. This class is for any 8 string octave mandolin or bouzouki that can be tuned GDAD. We will explore chords and scales, counter-point and harmony, talk about the main modes used in traditional music and focus on how to utilize the unique multi-string tone and texture of the OM/Bouzouki to your best advantage. No previous background in the instrument required.

Blues harp in the park--this is our first in-person class offering. Steve will be teaching outside. and will provide location to registrants.

The blues! Plain and simple. Deep and wonderful. The United States‘ great gift to the world. Register for either blues guitar or harmonica or both. Or have a friend sign up for the other one and form a duo. We will meet in person, outdoors at Laurelhurst Park or another suitable location. (If it rains we‘ll find shelter or reschedule.) Playing the harmonica really does strengthen your abs and improve your breathing. Probably the only instrument you play by inhaling, it is magical and mystical. Also, it’s one of the most affordable, portable and intimate of instruments, a friend to carry wherever you go. And it is a key element of America’s fabulous musical tradition, the blues. But it ain’t easy! All levels welcome, including beginners, as long as you are willing (and happy) to practice daily.

Artichoke Community Music online class led by Zac Leger, $80 for four classes.

Tunes for All Humans/All Instruments! The idea behind this class is very simple: give you two to three new tunes a week and enlarge the amount of tunes you can play and share with other musicians. Tunes will be broken down carefully and into bite-sized pieces to make them easy to pick up by ear. Then we will play the tunes slowly and relaxed, giving your muscle memory time to truly learn the tune! No more only half remembering a tune at a jam or wishing you could play that one you heard at the session but just did not have time to record or memorize!

Soldier Songs and Voices provides free songwriting workshops and guitar and voice instruction to veterans of all eras. We believe that everyone has a story to tell and that telling it in song is a path to a happier and healthier life. Loaner guitars are available. Previous musical experience and skill are not required. Just bring your curiosity and willingness to unleash your creativity. For the foreseeable future classes meet online. Register for either blues guitar or harmonica or both, or have a friend sign up for the other one and form a duo. We will meet in person, outdoors at Laurelhurst Park or another suitable location.
