Blues harp from the heart -- Playing the harmonica really does strengthen your abs and improve your breathing. Probably the only instrument you play by inhaling, it is magical and mystical. Also, it’s one of the most affordable, portable and intimate of instruments, a friend to carry wherever you go. And it is a key element of America’s fabulous musical tradition, the blues. But it ain’t easy! All levels welcome, including beginners, as long as you are willing (and happy) to practice daily.

Dadgad guitar tuning (dadgad) was popularized by Irish guitarists like Míchéal O‘Domhnaill (Bothy Band, Nightnoise, Relativity) and Arty McGlynn (Patrick Street, DeDannan, Four Men and A Dog, Van Morrison) as a distinctive new sound in progressive Irish music. Whether you play rock, country, folk or world music, this tuning works on all styles. Artichoke Community Music online class led by Haley Johnsen, $100 for four classes.

This course teaches the basics of songwriting for any style of music. Students should be prepared to come to the workshop with a recording device, pen and paper, and an instrument (although not required!). We will also be using Laura Veirs‘ ‘Kaleidoscope Creativity Cards’ which provide fun prompts for getting a song started. Students may purchase these from her website (https://ravenmarchingband.com/products/creativity-cards) or I can provide the prompts with my set of cards.

In the end, my hope is that you’ll feel confident of your ability to take an idea and develop it into a complete song!

Rough Weekly Schedule:
Week 1: The Basics - Structures, different ways to start a song, having a clear message
Week 2: Intro to Kaleidescope Creativity Cards - assign cards, speed write
Week 3: Kaleidescope Creativity Cards - new song assignment to take home and work on
Week 4: Perform song for the class

Since the late 1960s a uniquely Irish version of the Greek bouzouki has become commonplace in traditional music far beyond Ireland and the British Isles. At the same time, interest in other larger mandolin-family instruments like the octave mandolin or the cittern (usually with 10 strings) has increased all over the world. This class is for any 8 string octave mandolin or bouzouki that can be tuned GDAD. We will explore chords and scales, counter-point and harmony, talk about the main modes used in traditional music and focus on how to utilize the unique multi-string tone and texture of the OM/Bouzouki to your best advantage. No previous background in the instrument required.

Played by people of all ages, it is used by both amateurs and virtuoso professionals, alike. This class will start with the basics of the pennywhistle: scales, breath control, bedrock ornamentation and technique, slides and bends, tongue technique and more.

Tunes for All Humans/All Instruments! The idea behind this class is very simple: give you two to three new tunes a week and enlarge the amount of tunes you can play and share with other musicians. Tunes will be broken down carefully and into bite-sized pieces to make them easy to pick up by ear. Then we will play the tunes slowly and relaxed, giving your muscle memory time to truly learn the tune! No more only half remembering a tune at a jam or wishing you could play that one you heard at the session but just did not have time to record or memorize!
