An online 6-week performance class with Beth Wood, $150.

In this interactive six-week workshop we will work together in a safe, non-judgmental space to access our unique stories and translate them into song. What are the nuts and bolts of songwriting and how can we utilize them to convey our message? How do words suggest melody and vice versa? How does song form influence the communication of a narrative?

We will explore tools for beginnings and engage in wordplay exercises and guided free-writing. We will examine songs as examples and refine our awareness in noticing the choices that songwriters make. We will write, share, listen and learn from each other. Bring your open heart, your open mind and your curious spirit. All levels of songwriting experience are welcome.

Maximum of 12 participants for this virtual workshop series.

In this class we’ll learn some new and old tunes and delve into the nuances of bowing and ornamentation that make Irish fiddle what it is. We’ll look at ways of using the bow in polkas, jigs, reels and hornpipes – and how each tune type has its own pattern of accents that make us want to bow it a certain way. We’ll also explore all the ornaments used in Irish fiddle: left-hand ornaments like rolls and cuts, as well as ornaments executed with the bow. We’ll also look into how ornamentation affects bowing … or is it the other way around? Along the way we’ll also explore technical aspects of fiddle playing, especially bowing technique, intonation, and drawing on the fiddle’s resonance. Recordings and tune transcriptions provided.

We are starting up in-person sing arounds, but Golden Link will still be hosting virtual sing-arounds on Zoom.

Virtual sing arounds actually provide some advantages over in-person sing arounds as well. We‘ve seen participation from people around the United States and around the world. Even for people who live close by, sometimes travel to our in-person sing arounds can be an impediment to attending, especially on work nights. So, due to the success of the current Zoom sing arounds, we plan to continue the virtual sing arounds in addition to the in-person sing arounds even when things return to normal. This would allow many more people to participate than we see in our in-person sing arounds.

Led by Maggie Lind (clawhammer banjo), Patrick Lind (guitar), and Sophie Enloe (fiddle). Previous experience on your instrument is required. If you are playing in the fiddle or banjo sections, you should be fairly comfortable picking out melody notes by ear but we are working on developing this skill as well. Guitarists should be familiar with the following open position chords: A, C, D, E, F, G and able to play the bass note/after strum or “boom chuck” technique.

Cost for the 8 week session is sliding scale $160 – $125 per student. If you choose to skip the group zoom lessons you may have access to the online portion of the fall session for $80. Please email Maggie to register.

LIMITED TO 8 STUDENTS - Students must be vaccinated, masks optional. Rainy days, we will meet on line. Artichoke Community Music online class led by Anne Weiss, $20 weekly drop-in. Become a better player—all instruments/voices/levels. All you need to know is basic chords, or you can know a lot!

In this class we will take one new blues and one new folk song per week, listen carefully together and figure out what to work on and how to work on it to become a better player! You’ll be sent a nice, slow, clean recording of each song (by yours truly) plus chords and lyrics to work out your part, whether that is rhythm or bass guitar, voice, keyboards, guitar/horn/harmonica solos, etc. You will have the opportunity to share what you have come up with with the group (i.e., short “zoom” performances) if you choose, and get positive support and how to be an even better player/singer. This class will help you emerge prepared for the post-Covid music jam days to come!

With a nod to Women’s History Month, join co-hosts Lynn Noel and Janie Meneely in a musical conversation focusing on the power of women as reflected in the songs we sing. Let us explore together the many ways songs showcase women’s strength, courage and resilience—oh, and intelligence! Can’t leave out sheer smarts, often underplayed in representations of strong, brave, and resilient women facing an often uncharitable world.
