Open to all who play traditional Irish music and It has the obvious limitations of Zoom in that only one musician can play at a time. But we go round the ‘room’ and take it in turns - no pressure though and the baton can be passed if you just want to listen. We just play for a couple of hours.
On a good day we have a variety of instruments from pipes to Melodeon, banjo to fiddle and it can be a good way to pick up tunes. It is very friendly and we welcome everyone. The only criterion is we try to stick to Irish traditional.

Players of all skill levels will have a role in our arrangements. If you already play a standard instrument like guitar, mandolin or harmonica, or a homemade instrument like jug, washboard or washtub bass, please bring it. You’ll also have the opportunity to learn a homemade instrument if you like. Depending on how the class goes, we might conclude with a performance of some kind.

Artichoke Community Music online class led by Martha Stone, $100 for six classes.
Clawhammer Banjo is fun to learn, comfortable to play, and great for any age. You can play fiddle tunes, use chords to sing songs, or just have fun figuring out your own music. We’ll learn how to tune the banjo, how to bum-ditty, we’ll even learn scales and chords! No musical experience is necessary. We’ll start small and add a little more each class, by the end you’ll be playing three tunes.
This class will take place online via Zoom. Instructor will provide zoom link prior to class start date.
Artichoke Community Music School
Artichoke Community Music workshop led by Avery Hill, $20.
Many of us enjoy participating in jams, but have you ever considered leading a song at a jam? Learning to count folks in, and keeping time so everyone ends together, too, deepens the musical skills you already have and provides such a fulfilling musical challenge for those who love to play with others. This workshop will model for you all the skills and steps you need, and guide you through trying it out yourself!
What to bring:
An instrument to lead with - strumming instruments are great for this workshop, including ukulele, guitar, mandolin or banjo. Whatever you are most comfortable with.
If you have a specific song you‘d like to try leading, please bring a copy for yourself plus at least 5 copies to share. This is not required - you‘re welcome to choose from our examples, or just observe and learn from others trying it out.
A good attitude! We‘ll be learning by doing, supporting each other as we engage with a new skill set.
Note: Everyone is welcome to stick around for the monthly ukulele jam that begins at 2 pm, regardless of what instrument you play.
Artichoke Community Music
This mixed-level jam is best suited for ukulele players who are already comfortable playing in the Key of C and are looking to expand their repertoires, $10.
We play songs that pull from a variety of genres, songwriters, and musical traditions, especially those you won‘t hear at other ukulele jams. For example, we’ve got everything from folk favorites from The Carter Family to an ukulele adaption of “The Wind Cries Mary”, by Jimi Hendrix. We’ll play “Bring Me Little Water Sylvie”, by early 20th century songwriter Leadbelly, and then “Closer to Fine” by late 20th century rockers The Indigo Girls.
Songbooks provided. For a preview or to download / print ahead of time, join Avery‘s newsletter at: www.averyhill.studio/contact. Use the same link to contact Avery with any other questions or concerns.
Tom’s folk music program is going on 35 years and one of the longest running music radio shows around.
You can listen on www.folkmusicnotebook.com on Saturday at 4 pm PST and repeated again on Sunday at 1 am.
We open up a "room" on Zoom at 6 pm Pacific Time every Saturday evening. We start singing at 6:30 pm and we keep it going until the last person leaves. Feel free to come in anytime, and stay as long as you like. We run it kind of like a physical song circle. Everyone who wants to can sing once, and then we’ll do another round, and just keep going around as long as you like. Of course, it is totally fine to just listen and some people do. For more information, go to the heading ‘Song Circles‘ on this drop down menu.
