The class will be taught via Zoom. You must have Special 20 or other professional-quality diatonic harmonicas in the keys of A and C. Live looping allows musicians to lay down layer after layer of sound in real time. Please join us for an evening (or 2!) of creation and experimentation with live looping at this workshop. We will explore building songs with the looper, technical considerations, and avoiding common looping pitfalls. We will also co-create group loops in real time with a Boss RC 30 and 300 loop stations.

Loopers of all levels are welcome. We will have the space to split the group into two stations so beginners and more experienced loopers will be able to practice with others at their level.

We are starting up in-person sing arounds, but Golden Link will still be hosting virtual sing-arounds on Zoom.

Virtual sing arounds actually provide some advantages over in-person sing arounds as well. We‘ve seen participation from people around the United States and around the world. Even for people who live close by, sometimes travel to our in-person sing arounds can be an impediment to attending, especially on work nights. So, due to the success of the current Zoom sing arounds, we plan to continue the virtual sing arounds in addition to the in-person sing arounds even when things return to normal. This would allow many more people to participate than we see in our in-person sing arounds.

This course will begin with an overview of eight different song traditions in their historical and artistic contexts and with recorded examples from masters of each type. The next five sessions will delve deeper into four of the more important traditions, going backward through history (with the most accessible and easiest first). In each of those sessions we will work on learning (from a recording of a master) one or two of that type of song.

Those four types are: pub songs, traditional anglo-Irish songs, rhythmic Irish language songs, and the old arhythmic sean-nós songs. (If participants would rather not do the sean-nós songs in Irish, an English language translation could be substituted, if necessary.)

Traditional American Music, folk and traditional musics from a variety of sources including early country recordings from the 20s and 30s.

Artichoke Community Music online class led by Dan Compton, $100 for eight classes.

Learn the skills of playing traditional Irish music in a group and, along the way, pick up some great tunes. This class provides a semi-structured and supportive environment in which to explore the vast repertoire of jigs, reels, and what-have-you, with the ultimate goal of sharpening your listening skills. All tunes are learned by ear, either in class or from the CD each student receives at the beginning of the session. For advanced-beginning and intermediate players of traditional Irish instruments - fiddle, flute, accordion, whistle, banjo, concertina, guitar, mandolin, harp, bouzouki, etc.

Cafe Artichoke Live concert, $15, show: 2 pm (doors open at 1:30).

Skillful musicians and vocalists, "A Fine Mess" perform Irish, Scottish and American folk music with occasional rock, blues and country favorites. Most of all, this group is fun.
