Seisiún na nÓg is our monthly youth session lead by our Youth Officer Niamh Branigan. Youth are welcome to sit in to listen and chat with young musicians about learning Irish music; or bring their instrument and strike up an Irish tune they might be learning currently.

We are excited to host Portland Bluegrass Sunday Jam every 2nd and 4th Sundays (and 5th when it happens) at Artichoke, $5 cover at the door.

This is a live, in-person, and open Bluegrass jam from 1-4 pm. Acoustic only please, and all levels of experience welcome.

Uilleann piper Preston Howard Wilde leads an Irish piping session - it’s a wonderful way to spend a Sunday afternoon, all ages, 2-4 pm.

Mar 16 - pre-empted by St. Patrick‘s Day Celebration. Irish piping tunes can be heard on Mar 17 (Mon) from 11 am to 1 pm.

On Sunday afternoons, the Hostel Café in Portland, Oregon provides a friendly setting for this TrailJams Irish traditional tune session. TrailJams is a music community focused on making acoustic music together outside for the enjoyment of the musicians and of people passing by. The cozy café makes a great place to keep the music going in the winter. In better weather, the tune playing moves out to the café’s courtyard. Guests of the Hostel Café and the adjoining Northwest Portland Hostel are likely to settle at one of the nearby tables to enjoy the music.

Soldier Songs and Voices provides free songwriting workshops and guitar and voice instruction to veterans of all eras. We believe that everyone has a story to tell and that telling it in song is a path to a happier and healthier life. Loaner guitars are available. Previous musical experience and skill are not required. Just bring your curiosity and willingness to unleash your creativity. For the foreseeable future classes meet online. Portland World Music Chorus is an Artichoke Community Music School non-audition singing class and choir rolled into one, where the number one reason for returning is FUN. Led by Anne Weiss at an Off site location, full rRegistration price $165 for seven sessions, $30 drop-in rate, all ages, experienced, inexperienced (and in between) singers welcome.

PCDC Monday Free English Country Dancing (ECD) Slow Jam

PCDC sponsors an ECD slow jam on Mondays from 7-9 PM in the community room at McMenamins Kennedy School, 5736 NE 33rd Ave, Portland, OR 97211.

The events are free and open to all acoustic musicians, whether you play by dots or by ear.

The ECD jam plays tunes from the Barnes Collection. If you don’t have the books, we’re happy to share. Come make music with us!!

Kate and The Lads play traditional music, transporting you to the West of Ireland, free.

Tony Becker of San Jose, California and Mark Wallis of Gloucester, England host this Transatlantic session for all interested parties on Wednesdays at 8:00 PM UK time. For American visitors, please note we are now all on standard ‘winter‘ time, so that is 12:00 PM Pacific in the USA.

Open to all who play traditional Irish music and It has the obvious limitations of Zoom in that only one musician can play at a time. But we go round the ‘room’ and take it in turns - no pressure though and the baton can be passed if you just want to listen. We just play for a couple of hours.

On a good day we have a variety of instruments from pipes to Melodeon, banjo to fiddle and it can be a good way to pick up tunes. It is very friendly and we welcome everyone. The only criterion is we try to stick to Irish traditional.

Cowboy Angels Unplugged is a special acoustic show live at The Artichoke, $18 (doors open at 6:30 pm). Portland’s legendary band Cowboy Angels/X-Angels returns to the Rose City for a one night only special holiday presentation. Featuring original members Tom McGriff, John Bunzow, Rich Gooch, and Tom Royer - the Angels will perform an intimate acoustic show at The Artichoke This single show has limited seating so secure your tickets early!

We‘re baaaaack in a new venue on a new schedule and it‘s gonna be fun. Wood floor, fancy bar, lots of seating, $7 Cascade Zydeco members/$12 general admission. Once-a-month instead of once-a-week, so let‘s make the most of our first Tuesdays! Buy a beverage or a snack and show our new venue some love...

3rd Saturday - Will Selzer - Blends all types & styles of country music from 50+ years, rooted in mid-20th century, men and women artists equally. The goal is to entertain our listeners and to have fun.

4th Saturday - Mary - Bringing a musician’s ear to the collective with a focus on older country and Western swing from the ‘30s to the ‘70s, always with a good dose of women artists.

5th Saturday - Gary - Countrypolitan Blues - A mix of eastern philosophy and western swing; the yin, the yang, and the do-si-do.

Tune Explorer Sessions are a collaborative effort between MÓD and the TrailJams Community and consist of weekly slow & learning sessions for musician s who are just starting to build repertoire and skill, or are building proficiency on an instrument.

NOTE: Effective March 1, the suggested donation has been dropped to $5, cash or Venmo.

This session is focused on playing traditional Irish tunes on melody instruments (not rhythm instruments or percussion). For more information visit TrailJams. (For Winter 2025, the teaching & learning sessions are on the first and third Saturdays of the month. There are slow sessions - without teaching - on the second, fourth, and fifth Saturdays of the month. The slow sessions are at different locations.)

Tom’s folk music program is going on 35 years and one of the longest running music radio shows around.

Urban and country blues with R&B, soul, jazz, zydeco and classic rock, every Saturday from 5-7 pm.

We open up a "room" on Zoom at 6 pm Pacific Time every Saturday evening. We start singing at 6:30 pm and we keep it going until the last person leaves. Feel free to come in anytime, and stay as long as you like. We run it kind of like a physical song circle. Everyone who wants to can sing once, and then we’ll do another round, and just keep going around as long as you like. Of course, it is totally fine to just listen and some people do. We are honored to work with Max Tucker who is leading our student jazz jam at Artichoke Music! Max, along with the afternoon‘s "house" band, will warm up the stage with a short set and the jam will follow. Backline includes a keyboard and a drumset. This is a regularly occurring event happening once a month.

Mojo Holler + Renee Muzquiz, all ages, $10. Mojo Holler weaves threads from mountain ranges to the Mississippi Delta into a tapestry of indie alt-folk music. Mister Baker channels innate genius through lap steel, slide, and dobro. Missi is a genuine Appalachian ‘Mountain Mama‘ whose vocals bring burning intensity to each song. Online sales end one hour prior to show time. Remaining tickets will be sold at the door. Limited seating available on a first come first served basis. Oregon-based singer/guitarist/songwriter is a prodigious? talent whose seasoned skills have established her as one? of America‘s foremost roots performers. Flower combines a? deep historical knowledge with a restless creativity that? keeps her music evolving into new creative territory while? echoing influences from Piedmont to the Mississippi Delta,? with additional stops at ragtime, swing, folk, and hot jazz Midwest native Flower relocated from Denver to the vibrant? Portland music scene in 2004. Since then, she‘s continued? to impress crowds and critics at folk festivals in America? and abroad, including Merlefest, Waterfront Blues Fest, King Biscuit, A Prairie Home Companion and the? Vancouver Folk Festival, while maintaining a parallel career as a renowned educator.? Mary has shared her guitar skills at over 25 guitar intensives around the country and is about to celebrate? 10 years as Artistic Director at her own "Blues in the Gorge" near Portland, Oregon. Along the way, she‘s? twice been a finalist in the International Fingerstyle Guitar Championship, as well as being nominated? three times for the Blues Foundation‘s prestigious “Blues Music Award.” The Cascade Blues Assn. has? awarded Mary five years in a row, Best Acoustic Blues Musician. Mary is a contributing writer for Acoustic? Guitar Magazine and has recorded several CDs and many instructional DVDs for the Homespun label.?
