The 2026 FallSong Festival is Portland FolkMusic Society’s annual on-line worldwide event, taking place this year from 10:30 am, Friday October 23, through 6 pm, Sunday October 25 (all times Pacific).

FallSong is a place to enjoy the best folk music from many different traditions. FallSong consists of song circles, workshops and mini-concerts presented by the participants. As FallSong approaches, we will keep you posted about the events that will be available.

Guided by participant evaluations, the event has jelled into its current format, with lots and lots of song circles, and a few other events, including workshops, mini-concerts and All Participant Gatherings.

FallSong consists mostly of events offered by participants like you. If you would like to lead a song circle or a workshop, or offer a 20 minute long mini-concert, you can let us know when you register.

If you intend to lead a session, please register as soon as possible.

2026 Fall Pub Sing doors open at 4:15 pm, singing starts at 4:30, $10 suggested donation at the door. Join us on October 25th for our annual Fall Pub Sing - this time with a spooky theme! Uilleann piper Preston Howard Wilde leads an Irish piping session - it’s a wonderful way to spend a Sunday afternoon, all ages, 2-4 pm.

Marxhouse Concerts Presents Ash Devine Sunday 10-25-26 Door: 2:30 pm; Music 3:00 pm We are happy to bring Ash Devine to our series from Asheville North Carolina who we saw at the Folk Alliance International conference in New Orleans. Please note this is an afternoon concert with doors at 2:30 pm and music at 3 pm. Ash Devine is an internationally touring award-winning songwriter, Appalachian style folk musician, song leader, teaching artist and humanitarian clown based in the Blue Ridge region of Asheville, North Carolina. Ash‘s musical style spans several genres of contemporary folk and Americana, traditional Appalachian music, old time country, blues, and world music. Her concerts speak to a wide audience, incorporating original pieces with traditional music, cleverly improvised songs and audience participation. Her music is an authentic and unique representation of both contemporary and traditional Appalachian music and songwriting. Her voice and musicianship caught our attention and we are pleased to have her here while she is touring the NW. She will also be performing at the Key City Public Theatre in Port Townsend Washington on 10-21 (Wed) and 10-22 (Thu) at 7:30 pm, if you are up there on those days. The ball workshops are designed for learning the dances on the ball program and are not intended to be an introduction to English country dance. Each of these workshops will focus on different ball dances and styling tips. Familiarity with English figures and geography will be assumed at the workshops.

If you are new to English country dance, please attend the PCDC Friday Night English Dance as often as possible prior to participating in the workshops.

Old-Time Music Hostel Takeover is a new twice-yearly mini-music festival in Portland, OR October 22-25, 2026

Help support the NW Portland Hostel and join your fellow musicians jamming, socializing, and enjoying meals together at the Old-Time Music Hostel Takeover. This fun weekend will help support our favorite Portland jamming and party hostel during a difficult time, when fewer people are traveling internationally! The events are free and open to all acoustic musicians, whether you play by dots or by ear. The contra jam plays tunes from the Portland Collection and the waltz books edited by Bill Matthiesen. If you don’t have the books, we’re happy to share. Come make music with us!!

Open bluegrass jam at Tomorrow‘s Verse Taproom and Bottle Shop. Come join the jam every Tuesday with host Rich Landar. All levels of pickers are welcome to join in on the fun.

Don‘t play? Come listen! This will be a traditional style bluegrass circle, where people can join in as much as they‘d like.

If you would like to build your old-time music repertoire while meeting and playing with others, then this class is for you. Tier Pricing: $80-300.

We meet for eight weeks and learn six old-time tunes and songs. Get group instruction on fiddle, clawhammer banjo, or guitar (basses, ukulele, and mandolin players may join the fiddle or guitar sections with advance approval).

We start each lesson in a large group, and the instructors play the tune we will work on that evening. Then, we slow it down and all sing the melody together to learn it by ear. We separate into different classrooms for group lessons on each instrument. Finally, we come back together and play the tune all together.

At the fourth meeting, we review the first three tunes and focus on harmony singing. For the final class meeting, we will meet early for a big community dinner and will play all the tunes we have learned during the session. In addition to class meetings, enrolled students will have access to source recordings, demonstration videos, guitar chord charts, and banjo tabs for each tune we teach.

Instructors are Maggie Lind – clawhammer banjo, Patrick Lind – guitar, Sophie Enloe –fiddle. Bass, ukulele, and mandolin players are welcome.

Previous experience on your instrument is required. If you are playing in the fiddle or banjo sections, you should be able to play several tunes in G/A and D/C tunings and be fairly comfortable picking out melody notes by ear, and we are working on developing this skill as well. Guitarists should have a capo, be familiar with the following open position chords: A, C, D, E, F, G, and be able to play the bass note/after strum or “boom chuck” technique.

Covid Policy:
We ask that you be vaccinated and up to date on your boosters to attend class. Please do not come to class if you are sick or experiencing any cold, flu, or COVID symptoms.

Tony Becker of San Jose, California and Mark Wallis of Gloucester, England host this Transatlantic session for all interested parties on Wednesdays at 8:00 PM UK time. For American visitors, please note we are now all on standard ‘winter‘ time, so that is 12:00 PM Pacific in the USA.

Open to all who play traditional Irish music and It has the obvious limitations of Zoom in that only one musician can play at a time. But we go round the ‘room’ and take it in turns - no pressure though and the baton can be passed if you just want to listen. We just play for a couple of hours.

On a good day we have a variety of instruments from pipes to Melodeon, banjo to fiddle and it can be a good way to pick up tunes. It is very friendly and we welcome everyone. The only criterion is we try to stick to Irish traditional.

Mary Flower returns to Artichoke Music for an intimate evening of masterful guitar, rich vocals, and spellbinding music, $23.36 advance/ $28.60 at the door (all prices include service fee). Mary Flower’s immense finger-picking guitar and lap-slide prowess is soulful and meter-perfect, a deft blend of the inventive, the dexterous, and the mesmerizing. Her supple honey-and-whiskey voice provides the perfect melodic accompaniment to each song’s story. Flower embodies a luscious and lusty mix of rootsy, acoustic-blues guitar and vocal styles that span a number of idioms – from Piedmont to the Mississippi Delta, with stops in ragtime, swing, folk and hot jazz. Leon Cotter: Clarinet player Leon Cotter has spent much of the last decade touring the country with soul/blues band The California Honeydrops, while maintaining a reputation as a sought-after sideman and bandleader in Portland, Oregon. He draws from a deep well of inspiration as an improvisor and soloist, with influences ranging from 20s clarinet virtuoso Sidney Bechet, to South African piano legend Abdullah Ibrahim, to folk and bluegrass masters like Tony Rice and Tim O’Brien. When he’s not out with the Honeydrops, Leon performs regularly with Portland based bands Social Music (led by drummer Alan Jones) and Reb & the Good News, and leads his own quartet.

Join us every Thursday from 7–10 PM at The Hostel Cafe for our weekly Old Time Jam, a welcoming gathering for musicians who love traditional Appalachian tunes, fiddle music, and acoustic string-band sessions.

All skill levels are invited to play, listen, and connect with our lively local folk music community.

Just $10/week for the Winds of Donegal classes. Every Thursday we teach you the basics of the three‘s, seven‘s and jig steps so that you can enjoy the live music ceilis around Portland and Ireland. Classes are geared toward 13 and older. Bring a water bottle and wear comfortable shoes not heels.

Artichoke Community Music class hosted by Megan Cronin, $175 for seven sessions, drop-ins $30 per session. This class will be held at Taborspace, an off-site location.

This class is for beginner-ish and intermediate violin and fiddle players who want a chance to play their favorite songs with others in a supportive setting. At the start of this series the instructor will present 10 tunes in the genres of folk, jazz, bluegrass, Irish, blues, pop and/or classical. Students will vote in three of these tunes to work on over the course of the term.

This class is open to either those who would like to learn the basics of vulnerable songwriting or for songwriters who would like a supportive environment to practice infusing more emotion into their songs. We will share original music as well as examine music by other songwriters.

Mojo Holler Halloween concert: folk rock, Americana, roots blues, free. Mister Baker channels innate genius through lap steel, slide, and dobro. Missi is a genuine Appalachian ‘Mountain Mama’ whose vocals and percussion bring Southern heart and soul to each song. The notable Northwest musician and songwriter, Randy Yearout (of Tracey Fordice Band), joined Mojo Holler in 2023 on bass and acoustic guitars.

Our Saturday night Open Mike, Open Band dance at Fulton Hall.

7 pm newcomer/refresher lesson 7:30-10:30 pm dance, $6-20 sliding scale.

We will have some experienced lead and rhythm musicians to organize the music. Please contact them in advance so that you can learn about their musical plans.

An experienced local caller will lead the callers‘ Open Mike. Let them know if you‘re interested in a callers‘ discussion that afternoon.

PCDC no longer requires proof of vaccination, but we continue to encourage everyone to be vaccinated. While currently available COVID-19 vaccines no longer do much to prevent transmission, they continue to be effective for protecting oneself from more serious illness.

Americana singer-songwriter roots meets close-harmony folk. For fans of front-porch storytelling and songs that feel lived-in, $23.36 advance/ $28.60 at the door (all prices include service fee). Taylor Rae is a Texas-based singer-songwriter and touring musician bringing her solo show back to Portland, blending heartfelt original songwriting with warm, road-tested storytelling. This date also marks the market debut of her new duo project, Lemongrass - an Americana folk collaboration with musician Sam Hodgson, built around close harmonies, acoustic textures, and intimate songwriting. Together the two sets offer a full arc of Taylor‘s artistry: a return for longtime fans and a first introduction to what‘s next.

Uilleann piper Preston Howard Wilde leads an Irish piping session - it’s a wonderful way to spend a Sunday afternoon, all ages, 2-4 pm.

NOTE: We want to protect the floor, so please bring dancing shoes or warm socks.

The ball workshops are designed for learning the dances on the ball program and are not intended to be an introduction to English country dance. Each of these workshops will focus on different ball dances and styling tips. Familiarity with English figures and geography will be assumed at the workshops.

If you are new to English country dance, please attend the PCDC Friday Night English Dance as often as possible prior to participating in the workshops.

The First Sunday monthly song circle led by Cecilia Eng and Dave Mongeau will feature spooky songs.

Bring your songbooks, voices, and/or instruments for an afternoon of singing. A hat will be passed to defray the cost of the room. A small donation of $5 per person helps us pay for the location (a small open chapel down a short hallway to the right of the main narthex).

Snacks and non-alcoholic beverages are welcome. You are welcome to share songs from any genre.

Richard Colombo - Known for his clear tenor voice, masterful guitar work, and playful energy, Richard’s performances move easily between the profound and the delightfully whimsical — especially when he breaks out his banjo ukulele. A night with Richard leaves audiences feeling uplifted, inspired, and connected.

A lifelong educator, Richard discovered early on the magic of music to bring people together. His journey took him from performing in California’s folk scene to Portland, where he co-founded Artichoke Community Music, a nonprofit hub for music lovers and creators. He has released several acclaimed albums, led countless workshops, and continues to teach and perform throughout the community.

Inge Hoogerhuis is a singer-songwriter, but that is not how she started out - a lounge and cabaret singer from way back when, who traveled up and down Highway 75, to Las Vegas, and then found a home on the West Coast. She has sung in grange halls to fancy hotels, for 20 people from the back of a pick-up truck to 500,000 in San Francisco‘s Gay Pride. But her favorite thing to do is to write songs that capture both the humor and melancholy of the West, and that ruminate over love and justice, lost and gained.

Wendy Emerson is a folk jazz guitarist and vocalist whose music is influenced by ballads and show tunes from the swing era, as well as folk and rock music from the 1950s on. Her repertoire consists of jazzy covers and originals about love and loss served up with a generous helping of speaking truth to power.

Brent Calderwood is a Portland-based singer, songwriter, guitarist, and pianist inspired by indie-folk, Americana, and the American songbook.
