Join us up near Mt. Hood on Labor Day weekend for the 2026 Zigzag Old-Time Music Campout! It’s taking place Sept. 2-7, and will feature workshops with our guest artists Paul Silveria, Athena McKown, and Mark Kilianski.

Bring your instruments and your tent, van/small RV and take an easy hour drive from Portland to the beautiful Zigzag Mountain Farm on Mount Hood. Camping is in your choice of wooded sites or open meadows (restrooms and showers available).

Everyone is welcome, whether you play an instrument, sing, love to listen, or just want to relax in a beautiful place, surrounded by mountains and music.

Zigzag Mountain Farm is offering the option to come out early and stay for 5 days (Wednesday, Sept. 2-Monday, Sept. 7) or just enjoy the long weekend with a 3 day pass (Friday, Sept. 4 – Monday, Sept. 7).

Weekend matinees go on from 1-3 pm, free, all ages.

On Sunday afternoons, the Hostel Café in Portland, Oregon provides a friendly setting for this TrailJams Irish traditional tune session. TrailJams is a music community focused on making acoustic music together outside for the enjoyment of the musicians and of people passing by. The cozy café makes a great place to keep the music going in the winter. In better weather, the tune playing moves out to the café’s courtyard. Guests of the Hostel Café and the adjoining Northwest Portland Hostel are likely to settle at one of the nearby tables to enjoy the music.

NOTE: No session on Jun 7 (Sun) to make space for the Community Gathering.

COVID Policy:
Please be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 if you are joining this session — that is a request, not a requirement.

The First Sunday monthly song circle led by Cecilia Eng and Dave Mongeau will feature spooky songs.

Bring your songbooks, voices, and/or instruments for an afternoon of singing. A hat will be passed to defray the cost of the room. A small donation of $5 per person helps us pay for the location (a small open chapel down a short hallway to the right of the main narthex).

Snacks and non-alcoholic beverages are welcome. You are welcome to share songs from any genre.

Fiddle Repertoire Class with Gabrielle Macrae (The Horsenecks). Learn a new fiddle tune or two at each class in a relaxed group setting.

Build your jamming repertoire and make connections with other fiddlers. 5:15 pm in NE Portland. $25 per class drop-in. 1st & 3rd Sundays.

Irish music every Monday played by an array of the most stellar Irish musicians around, free.

There are no “tickets” to the Hayloft Concerts. Performers are paid only what you put in the tip jar (all of which goes to the performers).

The address remains 5304 Center St. NE in Salem (at the very east end of Center). Please come down the driveway and park in the pasture not on the street. While you’re waiting for the show to start, be sure to take a look at our 6 beautiful ducklings in their new (enlarged) pond behind the greenhouse.

Open bluegrass jam at Tomorrow‘s Verse Taproom and Bottle Shop. Come join the jam every Tuesday with host Rich Landar. All levels of pickers are welcome to join in on the fun.

Don‘t play? Come listen! This will be a traditional style bluegrass circle, where people can join in as much as they‘d like.

The “Forty Drop Few” are a trio, originally from the southwest, that play popular music of the early 1900s, free, 21+.

They perform in various styles from the era as a string band and are influenced by nothing other than the old 78 records that they love so well. Their main influences include New Orleans jazz, southwestern fiddle music, classic banjo rags, black string band music, hillbilly harmonies and unique vocals.

The trio consists of Ethan and Candra Francis and Elliot Kennedy who all currently reside in Portland, Oregon. The couple, also known as “Stone and Sue”, have been playing music together for close to a decade and met Kennedy who joined them 4 years ago. The three are inseparable and spend all of their time picking apart old tunes, listening to 78s, throwing shows in Portland and traveling around the country together.

We believe great things happen when we play tunes together! People connect with each other and make friends, and we keep our music traditions alive by sharing tunes and passing them on. What’s more, playing tunes can make you feel happy, and if you do it often enough, you’ll notice that you are getting better at playing your instrument too!

It turns out that you don’t even have to be in the same place…great things still happen when we play music together, online from the comfort of your own home.

If you like ’70s Laurel Canyon folk rock, you’ll feel at home with Happy For No Reason. Known for their “songs of mystical beauty,” the Portland band blends lush melodies, poetic songwriting, and soulful grooves.

The line-up for the night at Artichoke: Jo Alexis (piano and vocals), Neil Goldstein (guitar), Mark Pritchard (flute and vocals), Dan Schulte (bass), and Todd Bishop (drums). All of their songs are original and written by Jo Alexis and Neil Goldstein.

Unlock an entire world of songs and musical genres with this intro course to fingerstyle guitar.

In this four-week course, we’ll go over popular fingerpicking styles such as Travis picking, grounded in classical guitar technique. Students will also have the chance to apply their skills through learning a simple fingerpicking song by The White Stripes!

This class is for you if:

-You strum a little guitar but have always wanted to try fingerpicking

-You love folk and/or singer-songwriters and want to learn how they play (whether classics like Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell or modern players like Phoebe Bridgers and Kurt Vile)

-You want to learn how to accompany yourself using beautiful, melodic fingerpicking patterns

Come join an easygoing, supportive space to learn a new way of playing guitar! This class is limited to six students in order to give each student personalized attention and allow plenty of time for questions and exploration.

Beginner knowledge of guitar (how to strum and play a few chords such as C, G, and D) is suggested.

Zach Bailey (he/they) is a small town, assigned boy at birth, raised in the bright lights on stage. Forged in the LA open mic scene, Zach’s tender, reflective songs weave inherited legends into personal narrative. Zach is one of the founders of Lazy River Presents, where he has hosted a songwriter’s open mic for the past three years, first at The Silverlake Lounge and now at The Fable. Zach continues to write and record with their community of collaborators and is set to take his stories on the road this fall.

This year‘s location offers plenty of parking, easy access, and is ADA accessible, making it easier than ever for everyone to join the fun.

Seisiún na nÓg is our monthly youth session lead by our Youth Officer Niamh Branigan. Youth are welcome to sit in to listen and chat with young musicians about learning Irish music; or bring their instrument and strike up an Irish tune they might be learning currently.

The Cajun Jam is now being held in the Community Room at the Kennedy School. It’s a great space with room for both dancers and musicians.

Every 2nd Sunday and 4th Sunday join the Cajun Jam as a musician, dancer, or just come and listen to the music. It‘s free and you can bring your drinks/snacks into the Community Room with you. There‘s some room to dance on the nice wooden floor.

The 2nd Sunday English Dance for Experienced Dancers is an opportunity to dance to the music of Fine Companions (and friends), suggested donation $10-20 sliding scale, dance shoes required, no street shoes permitted beyond the entrance.

- Regular and Double figure eights
- Triple minor progressions
- Dancing with couples outside of your group of 4
- Straight and draw poussettes.

Second Sunday Irish Session at Grand Lodge, free, all ages, 7-9 pm.

Come join our open Irish session at Garage Door. Sessions will be hosted by Mikela Valenzuela, an avid Celtic fiddler and local teacher. Come ready with your favorite tune to suggest or just listen and learn along with us. The session is at an intermediate level but very welcoming to beginners as well. Sláinte!

Artichoke Community Music Sunday, September 13 • 7 PM - 9 PM Overview advance/ An almost acoustic power trio for the 21st century, with fretless bass, guitar and percussion, $23.36 advance/ $28.60 at the door (prices include service fees). Michael Manring has been pushing the boundaries of the fretless bass for over 40 years and is considered one of the great bass players in the history of the instrument. Tony Kaltenberg is one of the most unique-sounding fingerstyle guitarists on the circuit with mesmerizing percussive, tapping and fingerstyle techniques. He composes most of the instrumental music the trio plays. Jarrod Kaplan is an irreplaceable force of nature on percussion with a setup that includes djembe, anklets, cymbals. Get ready for a transcendental evening, going places you’ve never gone before. It is indeed an almost acoustic groove experience!
