Mark your calendar and join us for one of our favorite events of the year! Our annual Member Appreciation Picnic is a chance to relax, connect with fellow blues lovers, and celebrate the incredible community that makes the Cascade Blues Association so special, members free, $10 for non-members. We‘ll enjoy live music from Johnny Wheels and the Swamp Donkeys, followed by an open jam, so bring your instrument, or just bring your applause! This year‘s location offers plenty of parking, easy access, and is ADA accessible, making it easier than ever for everyone to join the fun.

Seisiún na nÓg is our monthly youth session lead by our Youth Officer Niamh Branigan. Youth are welcome to sit in to listen and chat with young musicians about learning Irish music; or bring their instrument and strike up an Irish tune they might be learning currently.

Friends of Portland Memory Garden invite you to Live Music in the Garden, free to all.

Every 2nd Sunday and 4th Sunday join the Cajun Jam as a musician, dancer, or just come and listen to the music. It‘s free and you can bring your drinks/snacks into the Community Room with you. There‘s some room to dance on the nice wooden floor.

The Cajun Jam is now being held in the Community Room at the Kennedy School. It’s a great space with room for both dancers and musicians.

The 2nd Sunday English Dance for Experienced Dancers is an opportunity to dance to the music of Fine Companions (and friends), suggested donation $10-20 sliding scale, dance shoes required, no street shoes permitted beyond the entrance.

The dances will be a balance of familiar dances and unfamiliar dances. The callers will encourage dancers to incorporate style points such as quality of movement, timing, transitions and dancing with the music.

We ask that dancers be comfortable dancing standard English Dance figures including:
- Heys in various orientations
- Regular and Double figure eights
- Triple minor progressions
- Dancing with couples outside of your group of 4
- Straight and draw poussettes.

Mask Policy:
All regular Contra and English dances will be mask-optional.

COVID Policy:
PCDC no longer requires proof of vaccination, but we continue to encourage everyone to be vaccinated. While currently available COVID-19 vaccines no longer do much to prevent transmission, they continue to be effective for protecting oneself from more serious illness.

There are no “tickets” to the Hayloft Concerts. Performers are paid only what you put in the tip jar (all of which goes to the performers).

The address remains 5304 Center St. NE in Salem (at the very east end of Center). Please come down the driveway and park in the pasture not on the street. While you’re waiting for the show to start, be sure to take a look at our 6 beautiful ducklings in their new (enlarged) pond behind the greenhouse.

Second Sunday Irish Session at Grand Lodge, free, all ages, 7-9 pm.

Come join our open Irish session at Garage Door. Sessions will be hosted by Mikela Valenzuela, an avid Celtic fiddler and local teacher. Come ready with your favorite tune to suggest or just listen and learn along with us. The session is at an intermediate level but very welcoming to beginners as well. Sláinte!

Artichoke Community Music Sunday, September 13 • 7 PM - 9 PM Overview advance/ An almost acoustic power trio for the 21st century, with fretless bass, guitar and percussion, $23.36 advance/ $28.60 at the door (prices include service fees). Michael Manring has been pushing the boundaries of the fretless bass for over 40 years and is considered one of the great bass players in the history of the instrument. Tony Kaltenberg is one of the most unique-sounding fingerstyle guitarists on the circuit with mesmerizing percussive, tapping and fingerstyle techniques. He composes most of the instrumental music the trio plays. Jarrod Kaplan is an irreplaceable force of nature on percussion with a setup that includes djembe, anklets, cymbals. Joseph Decosimo is a multi-instrumentalist (fiddle, banjo, guitar, droney things), singer, and leading interpreter and teacher of traditional music from southern Appalachia, where he grew up and learned from the region’s last master musicians. Portland Country Dance Community (PCDC) sponsors an English country dancing (ECD) slow jam on the 2nd and 4th Mondays from 7-9 PM in the community room at McMenamins Kennedy School, 5736 NE 33rd Ave, Portland, OR 97211.

The events are free and open to all acoustic musicians, whether you play by dots or by ear. The contra jam plays tunes from the Portland Collection and the waltz books edited by Bill Matthiesen. If you don’t have the books, we’re happy to share. Come make music with us!!

Calling all aficianados of jug band music - acoustic instruments only. Portland Jug Band Jam at the Oakshire Beer Hall every 2nd Monday - outside in the tent.

Featured artists will bring some different songs and arrangements to the jam.

Oakshire is now open till 10 pm and serves pizza, salads and snacks. Outside food is still welcome. There‘s also a food cart on site and a couple more nearby. Keep up to date on the jam by going to the Facebook link above to join the group and get on the email list to get all the info on the jams.

San Miguel Fraser is redefining folk music with their dynamic fusion of Castilian and Celtic traditions, $31.25 (includes service fees), Minors OK when accompanied by a parent or guardian, doors open at 6 pm, show at 7. The duo blends heartfelt vocals, intricate string arrangements, and the lively charm of the cittern. It features María San Miguel, an Oviedo Conservatory graduate deeply rooted in the vibrant music of Castile, and Galen Fraser, a Berklee College of Music alumnus and son of the legendary fiddler Alasdair Fraser. With their unique chamber-folk style, San Miguel Fraser crafts performances that resonate deeply with audiences worldwide. Open bluegrass jam at Tomorrow‘s Verse Taproom and Bottle Shop. Come join the jam every Tuesday with host Rich Landar. All levels of pickers are welcome to join in on the fun.

Don‘t play? Come listen! This will be a traditional style bluegrass circle, where people can join in as much as they‘d like.

Baobab Trio features Will Dudley on kora (West African harp), Michael Shay on cello, and Steven Skolnik on drums ($21.26 advance/ $25.46 at the door (prices include service fees). Rooted in the musical traditions of West Africa, the trio branches out into novel harmonies, unexpected time signatures and bold improvisation, inviting listeners into a musical experience that feels both ancient and new.Will plays a baritone kora of his own design, tuned five whole steps lower than a standard kora. He studied the instrument in Gambia and Mali, immersing himself in traditional West African music, and now composes original melodies woven with funky bass lines. Michael brings emotive depth drawn from North American, classical and world folk traditions, while Steven anchors the group with sensitive nuance on a wide variety of world percussion.

Blue Flags & Black Grass is a combination of many flavors of acoustic American roots music. With instrumentation of banjo, res-o-phonic guitar, fiddle, washboard, kazoo and upright bass, Blue Flags emulates the String Bands of the 1920s and ‘30s. Their typical gig will blend ragtime, viper jazz, country blues, old-time, jug band and bluegrass. While performing classic standards and dusting off hidden gems, Blue Flags also features original songs by Flip ‘Fats’ McGuire, plays every third Tuesday, free, 21+.

Tony Becker of San Jose, California and Mark Wallis of Gloucester, England host this Transatlantic session for all interested parties on Wednesdays at 8:00 PM UK time. For American visitors, please note we are now all on standard ‘winter‘ time, so that is 12:00 PM Pacific in the USA.

Open to all who play traditional Irish music and It has the obvious limitations of Zoom in that only one musician can play at a time. But we go round the ‘room’ and take it in turns - no pressure though and the baton can be passed if you just want to listen. We just play for a couple of hours.

On a good day we have a variety of instruments from pipes to Melodeon, banjo to fiddle and it can be a good way to pick up tunes. It is very friendly and we welcome everyone. The only criterion is we try to stick to Irish traditional.

Alan Hager first picked up a guitar at age ten and became a blues and jazz prodigy. During the 1980s, he toured as part of a classical guitar duo and took up teaching, which he still does. But he never fell out of love with the blues, especially the old Delta sounds of Charlie Patton, Tommy Johnson, and Skip James. Albert Reda has played his bass and shared his vocals with Northwest music artists such as Ellen Whyte, Bill Rhodes, John Bunzow, Jon Koonce, Lloyd Jones, Duffy Bishop, Terry Robb, Kim Field, and many others. Unlock an entire world of songs and musical genres with this intro course to fingerstyle guitar.

In this four-week course, we’ll go over popular fingerpicking styles such as Travis picking, grounded in classical guitar technique. Students will also have the chance to apply their skills through learning a simple fingerpicking song by The White Stripes!

This class is for you if:

-You strum a little guitar but have always wanted to try fingerpicking

-You love folk and/or singer-songwriters and want to learn how they play (whether classics like Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell or modern players like Phoebe Bridgers and Kurt Vile)

-You want to learn how to accompany yourself using beautiful, melodic fingerpicking patterns

Come join an easygoing, supportive space to learn a new way of playing guitar! This class is limited to six students in order to give each student personalized attention and allow plenty of time for questions and exploration.

Beginner knowledge of guitar (how to strum and play a few chords such as C, G, and D) is suggested.

We open up a "room" on Zoom at 6 pm Pacific Time every Saturday evening. We start singing at 6:30 pm and we keep it going until the last person leaves. Feel free to come in anytime, and stay as long as you like. We run it kind of like a physical song circle. Everyone who wants to can sing once, and then we’ll do another round, and just keep going around as long as you like. Of course, it is totally fine to just listen and some people do. A queer, nu-folk, singer-songwriter with a voice like complex coffee, Gráinne Hunt is a standout among Ireland’s most compelling vocalists and songwriters – blending raw emotion with a quiet, commanding power. Her songs are known for their emotional honesty and melodic beauty, often exploring themes of love, resilience, and personal growth. Hunt’s warm stage presence and expressive voice allow the stories in her music to unfold naturally, drawing audiences into an intimate listening experience. Doors to seating open at 7. PFS Eastside Concerts 2026/2027 take place at Reedwood Friends Church. These concerts have a focus on national and international artists. This September marks 11 incredible years of Tablao Flamenco la Alcachofa at Artichoke Music! For over a decade, our monthly Tablao has been a space for the spontaneous magic of flamenco improvisation—a dynamic conversation between dancers, musicians, and the audience. No two Tablaos are ever alike. Each performance unfolds in the moment, shaped by the artists, the music, and the energy of everyone in the room.

Jordan Smart (KY) plays a night of intimate modern folk music at the Laurelthirst Pub with local singer-songwriter Blair Borax opening, $10 advance (plus $1.41 service fee)/ $15 cash at the door, 21+. Jordan Smart is a Kentucky-based folk singer-songwriter known best for his raw delivery of heartfelt songs ranging from achingly personal to intensely topical and satirical protest. Drawing comparisons to the likes of John Prine, Malvina Reynolds, Phil Ochs, Barbara Dane, and Woody Guthrie among others, Smart crafts thoughtful lyrics heavily saturated with a deep sense of empathy and humanity. Blair Borax has become a prolific songwriter, recording artist, and performer, known for her distinctive voice, captivating melodies, and thoughtful songwriting that taps into the heart of being human gentle reminders to quiet the inner critic, find joy in the small things, and embrace the precious brevity of our time on Earth.

Self Portrait is a two-act solo show performed by Brittany Brook on her guitar and dulcimer. $23.36 advance/ $28.60 at the door (prices include service fees). It’s a set of original songs (with sprinkles of Joni Mitchell, John Denver and Brandi Carlile) arranged around the story of her life. At several junctures, you, the audience, will help choose the adventure–will we get blackballed acting the role of a cheerleader on a major stage or swim in the grief of a parent’s diagnosis? Your being there will truly shape the show, so come ready to laugh, cry, vote, sing and maybe even heal. Brittany Brook (she, ella) is a musician, songwriter, actor and trauma-informed teacher. Through singing around her guitar, she works to create community and healing for kids and their caretakers. A former New Yorker, she now lives and teaches in Portland on the land of many tribes, including the Clackamas, Molalla, and Tualatin.

Marxhouse Concers are delighted to start the fall season with Crys Matthews. whom we have seen several times since 2020. She is a singer-songwriter and guitarist in the tradition of social justice and human rights from the American tradition. In her own words, Matthews says her mission is: "to amplify the voices of the unheard, to shed light on the unseen, and to be a steadfast reminder that hope and love are the truest pathways to equity and justice." Her new album is an embodiment of and a testament to that mission. A daughter of the South by way of Nashville now and North Carolina forever, and the self-proclaimed poster child of intersectionality, Matthews is boldly answering those questions on her new album aptly titled Reclamation. A preacher‘s kid, a Black woman, a Butch lesbian, and a proud Southerner who sings social justice music right alongside ‘traditional‘ country and Americana music, Matthews is reclaiming not just of the space Black artists have been denied in country and Americana music, not just of the space LGBTQ people have been denied in communities of faith, not just of the autonomy women have been denied over their own bodies, she is reclaiming the South that raised her.
