On Sunday afternoons, the Hostel Café in Portland, Oregon provides a friendly setting for this TrailJams Irish traditional tune session. TrailJams is a music community focused on making acoustic music together outside for the enjoyment of the musicians and of people passing by. The cozy café makes a great place to keep the music going in the winter. In better weather, the tune playing moves out to the café’s courtyard. Guests of the Hostel Café and the adjoining Northwest Portland Hostel are likely to settle at one of the nearby tables to enjoy the music.

Portland Country Dance Community (PCDC) sponsors a contra slow jam on Mondays from 7-9 PM in the community room at McMenamins Kennedy School.

The events are free and open to all acoustic musicians, whether you play by dots or by ear.

The contra jam plays tunes from the Portland Collection and the waltz books edited by Bill Matthiesen.

Tony Becker of San Jose, California and Mark Wallis of Gloucester, England host this Transatlantic session for all interested parties on Wednesdays at 8:00 PM UK time. For American visitors, please note we are now all on standard ‘winter‘ time, so that is 12:00 PM Pacific in the USA.

Open to all who play traditional Irish music and It has the obvious limitations of Zoom in that only one musician can play at a time. But we go round the ‘room’ and take it in turns - no pressure though and the baton can be passed if you just want to listen. We just play for a couple of hours.

On a good day we have a variety of instruments from pipes to Melodeon, banjo to fiddle and it can be a good way to pick up tunes. It is very friendly and we welcome everyone. The only criterion is we try to stick to Irish traditional.

Master button accordion player John Whelan hosts a free tune learning slow session on Zoom. The session starts at 2:30 pm Pacific time, lasts for about one hour, with a 30 minute break, and starting the Taking Time Slow Session at 4 pm Pacific.

Players and listeners of all levels are very welcome to enjoy playing or hearing favorite tunes at a moderate tempo, along with the all-important warmth of connection that shared music brings into our lives, even — or rather, especially — now.

This is also a great opportunity for learning new tunes, as everybody but the session leader (John) will be muted while they play. Unlike an in-person session you can noodle along to your heart’s content, and nobody will ever know unless you tell them.

John sends out the Zoom link and tune list to his newsletter subscribers every week, usually on Tuesday evening (Pacific time). Please make sure to sign up for his email newsletter, on his website, using the link below. That is all you need to do — no separate sign-up process required!

Grateful Brass embraces the challenge of carrying on a 50+ year tradition of imagination, creativity, and groovy improvisatory adventures. This loving homage will make you fall in love with Grateful Dead’s music all over again, or for the ?rst time, general admission $55.25, 21+ (doors open at 8 pm). Take a deep breath. Close your eyes. Wait, actually keep them open and keep reading, but imagine in your minds eye an alternate reality in which Jerry, Bobby and Phil came up as horn players instead of guitarists… Grateful Brass reimagines the iconic music of the Grateful Dead with an instrumentation of brass, drums and vocals (no guitar!). The music digs deep into the Grateful Dead discography with creative re-imaginations infused with the ebullient spirit of New Orleans Second Line, trance-like grooves of Afrobeat, brass-driven energy of Balkan music, and energetic Afro-Cuban polyrhythms, all sitting on top of a heavy foundation of funk. Grateful Brass is led by Adam Theis who is a current member of The Wolf Pack with Bob Weir & Wolf Bros and whose arrangements are featured in their live shows. Some of the ?nest musicians on the West Coast have joined Theis in creating this newest offshoot of the Bay Area music collective Jazz Ma?a; many who have long collaborated with other artists in the Grateful Dead community like Mickey Hart, Joe Russo’s Ain’t Dead Yet, Peter Rowan, Reed Mathis, Jackie Greene, and Cold Blood. Music in the country style, including western & western swing, cowboy & country blues, country folk, bluegrass, rockabilly, hillbilly, Americana, and honky tonk. hosted by Robert Parish, Wayne and Kathy Johnson, Wayne Selzer, Mary Rondthaler, and Gary Baysinger.

1st Saturday - Robert Parish along with son Graham play sets featuring particular artists as well as sets with a variety of artist.

2nd Saturday, Wayne and Kathy - Variety of country, western, western swing, country folk, country blues, bluegrass, rockabilly and Americana.

3rd Saturday - Will Selzer - Blends all types & styles of country music from 50+ years, rooted in mid-20th century, men and women artists equally. The goal is to entertain our listeners and to have fun.

4th Saturday - Mary - Bringing a musician’s ear to the collective with a focus on older country and Western swing from the ‘30s to the ‘70s, always with a good dose of women artists.

5th Saturday - Gary - Countrypolitan Blues - A mix of eastern philosophy and western swing; the yin, the yang, and the do-si-do.

Tune Explorer Sessions are a collaborative effort between MÓD and the TrailJams Community and consist of weekly slow & learning sessions for musician s who are just starting to build repertoire and skill, or are building proficiency on an instrument.

NOTE: Effective March 1, the suggested donation has been dropped to $5, cash or Venmo.

This session is focused on playing traditional Irish tunes on melody instruments (not rhythm instruments or percussion). For more information visit TrailJams. (For Winter 2025, the teaching & learning sessions are on the first and third Saturdays of the month. There are slow sessions - without teaching - on the second, fourth, and fifth Saturdays of the month. The slow sessions are at different locations.)

Urban and country blues with R&B, soul, jazz, zydeco and classic rock, every Saturday from 5-7 pm.

We open up a "room" on Zoom at 6 pm Pacific Time every Saturday evening. We start singing at 6:30 pm and we keep it going until the last person leaves. Feel free to come in anytime, and stay as long as you like. We run it kind of like a physical song circle. Everyone who wants to can sing once, and then we’ll do another round, and just keep going around as long as you like. Of course, it is totally fine to just listen and some people do. On Sunday afternoons, the Hostel Café in Portland, Oregon provides a friendly setting for this TrailJams Irish traditional tune session. TrailJams is a music community focused on making acoustic music together outside for the enjoyment of the musicians and of people passing by. The cozy café makes a great place to keep the music going in the winter. In better weather, the tune playing moves out to the café’s courtyard. Guests of the Hostel Café and the adjoining Northwest Portland Hostel are likely to settle at one of the nearby tables to enjoy the music.
