On Sunday afternoons, the Hostel Café in Portland, Oregon provides a friendly setting for this TrailJams Irish traditional tune session. TrailJams is a music community focused on making acoustic music together outside for the enjoyment of the musicians and of people passing by. The cozy café makes a great place to keep the music going in the winter. In better weather, the tune playing moves out to the café’s courtyard. Guests of the Hostel Café and the adjoining Northwest Portland Hostel are likely to settle at one of the nearby tables to enjoy the music.

Settle in every Tuesday evening for a perfect pairing of craft beer and toe-tapping bluegrass. Tomorrow’s Verse Taproom transforms into a cozy community stage where local pickers and traveling troubadours bring banjos, fiddles, mandolins, and sweet harmonies to life. With an ever-rotating lineup of talent, each week promises something fresh—sometimes rowdy, sometimes soulful, always authentic.

Grab a pint from our wide selection of brews, pull up a chair with friends (or make new ones), and let the music carry you into the night. Whether you’re a lifelong fan of bluegrass or just here for the good vibes, it’s a Tuesday tradition worth raising a glass to.

If you would like to build your old-time music repertoire while meeting and playing with others, then this class is for you. Tier Pricing: $80-300.

We meet for eight weeks and learn six old-time tunes and songs. Get group instruction on fiddle, clawhammer banjo, or guitar (basses, ukulele, and mandolin players may join the fiddle or guitar sections with advance approval).

We start each lesson in a large group, and the instructors play the tune we will work on that evening. Then, we slow it down and all sing the melody together to learn it by ear. We separate into different classrooms for group lessons on each instrument. Finally, we come back together and play the tune all together.

At the fourth meeting, we review the first three tunes and focus on harmony singing. For the final class meeting, we will meet early for a big community dinner and will play all the tunes we have learned during the session. In addition to class meetings, enrolled students will have access to source recordings, demonstration videos, guitar chord charts, and banjo tabs for each tune we teach.

Instructors are Maggie Lind – clawhammer banjo, Patrick Lind – guitar, Sophie Enloe –fiddle. Bass, ukulele, and mandolin players are welcome.

Previous experience on your instrument is required. If you are playing in the fiddle or banjo sections, you should be able to play several tunes in G/A and D/C tunings and be fairly comfortable picking out melody notes by ear, and we are working on developing this skill as well. Guitarists should have a capo, be familiar with the following open position chords: A, C, D, E, F, G, and be able to play the bass note/after strum or “boom chuck” technique.

Covid Policy:
We ask that you are vaccinated and current on your boosters to attend class. We do not require masking, but it is encouraged and welcomed if you feel compromised in any way.

This coming Wednesday, February 18th, is our annual Sad Song Happy Hour where, following Mr. John’s advice, we celebrate the worst weather of the year with the saddest, most maudlin songs we can find. Murder, disease, lost loves and loved ones, revenge fantasies, and life’s unfairness as expressed in old time folk, or acoustic blues numbers are all welcome and encouraged. Bring along some words, chords, or sheet music and we’ll sing our troubles away together !

Whiskey Deaf is a Portland Bluegrass Band, playing traditional bluegrass, old-time and early country. This quartet features Annie Staninec, John Kael, Ethan Lawton and Forrest Marowitz. Annie‘s stellar fiddling and joyful vocals take center stage as they have on tour.

The County Fools are: Mark Klassen (guitar), Darian Santner (mandolin), Gerrit Vyn (banjo). John Wyatt (bass). They play authentic Northwest bluegrass.

Sunny South is one of the top bluegrass bands in the Portland, Oregon area, playing fiery bluegrass with tight harmonies and wonderful musicianship. Founding members Mike Stahlman (banjo) and Dave Elliott (mandolin) are joined by Steve Reischman (guitar), Dee Johnson (bass) and Nancy Padilla (fiddle).

The return of Oíche na nAmhrán (Night of Songs) has been an absolute joy! Every third Thursday, join us for a lovely night of song and story; then stick around until 9 for the community sing portion of the evening!!

Featuring the best in traditional and contemporary folk and roots music, on Friday mornings. Features a variety of contemporary and traditional folk and roots music, with a focus on new releases and vintage favorites.

Tune Explorer Sessions are a collaborative effort between MÓD and the TrailJams Community and consist of weekly slow & learning sessions for musician s who are just starting to build repertoire and skill, or are building proficiency on an instrument.

NOTE: Effective March 1, the suggested donation has been dropped to $5, cash or Venmo.

This session is focused on playing traditional Irish tunes on melody instruments (not rhythm instruments or percussion). For more information visit TrailJams. (For Winter 2025, the teaching & learning sessions are on the first and third Saturdays of the month. There are slow sessions - without teaching - on the second, fourth, and fifth Saturdays of the month. The slow sessions are at different locations.)

Urban and country blues with R&B, soul, jazz, zydeco and classic rock, every Saturday from 5-7 pm.

We open up a "room" on Zoom at 6 pm Pacific Time every Saturday evening. We start singing at 6:30 pm and we keep it going until the last person leaves. Feel free to come in anytime, and stay as long as you like. We run it kind of like a physical song circle. Everyone who wants to can sing once, and then we’ll do another round, and just keep going around as long as you like. Of course, it is totally fine to just listen and some people do. May 18 theme: “House of the Rising Sun - the way you like it.”

Oregon’s largest annual folk music concert event, a benefit for Transition Projects, will celebrate its 37th Anniversary tonight (doors: 6 pm, show: 7 pm). Winterfolk is one of those rare expressions of giving and brings our community together in the common celebration of music and caring – with the knowledge that every dollar raised at the door goes to the people it is intended to help. For over 57 years, Transition Projects has delivered life-saving and life changing support to some of Portland’s most vulnerable residents. On Sunday afternoons, the Hostel Café in Portland, Oregon provides a friendly setting for this TrailJams Irish traditional tune session. TrailJams is a music community focused on making acoustic music together outside for the enjoyment of the musicians and of people passing by. The cozy café makes a great place to keep the music going in the winter. In better weather, the tune playing moves out to the café’s courtyard. Guests of the Hostel Café and the adjoining Northwest Portland Hostel are likely to settle at one of the nearby tables to enjoy the music.

We are excited to announce we will have Tracy Grammer come perform at a Marxhouse Concert on Sunday 2-22-26! We have followed Tracy’s music since she was with her husband Dave Carter from 1998-2002, suggested donation $25-30. Tragically he died and Tracy carried on his and her legacy of postmodern mythic American folk. She toured playing their music and over time released several archival and solo recordings. She has continued to grow and perfect her songwriting skills and her mastery of the guitar and violin. Luckily she is with us as part of a tour in PDX to play at Winterfolk 2026 at Alberta Rose as a benefit concert for Portland’s Transition Projects which she has headlined many times. We have seen her at Winterfolk most recently last year and she continues to amaze us in the depth of her songwriting skills and the emotional journey of her music and stories. To add to her amazing talents she became involved in acting since 2018 in community and regional theaters.
