On Sunday afternoons, the Hostel Café in Portland, Oregon provides a friendly setting for this TrailJams Irish traditional tune session. TrailJams is a music community focused on making acoustic music together outside for the enjoyment of the musicians and of people passing by. The cozy café makes a great place to keep the music going in the winter. In better weather, the tune playing moves out to the café’s courtyard. Guests of the Hostel Café and the adjoining Northwest Portland Hostel are likely to settle at one of the nearby tables to enjoy the music.

We’re excited to bring back the Portland Radio Project (PRP) Open Mic — a welcoming stage for local musicians and music lovers alike.

Join us Sunday, March 15 at The Riff at B-Side Records & Vintage on SE Main in Milwaukie as we relaunch this community tradition.

Musicians, bring what you need and come share your sound — acoustic or electric. A backline will be available.

And yes — it’s free, all ages. No cover, no sign-up fee. Just a room full of people supporting local music.

Contra Remix: Gender-free Queer-friendly DJ‘d contra dancing.

Contra Remix is back, with caller and DJ Noah Grunzweig.

This is a queer loving space that supports the expression, exploration, and rejection of gender & sex identities. The terms used to identify partnered positioning in our dance are Larks and Robins.

PCDC no longer requires proof of vaccination, but we continue to encourage everyone to be vaccinated. While currently available COVID-19 vaccines no longer do much to prevent transmission, they continue to be effective for protecting oneself from more serious illness.

Settle in every Tuesday evening for a perfect pairing of craft beer and toe-tapping bluegrass. Tomorrow’s Verse Taproom transforms into a cozy community stage where local pickers and traveling troubadours bring banjos, fiddles, mandolins, and sweet harmonies to life. With an ever-rotating lineup of talent, each week promises something fresh—sometimes rowdy, sometimes soulful, always authentic.

Grab a pint from our wide selection of brews, pull up a chair with friends (or make new ones), and let the music carry you into the night. Whether you’re a lifelong fan of bluegrass or just here for the good vibes, it’s a Tuesday tradition worth raising a glass to.

The music corner fills with super talented female musicians and the room overflows with their fantastic music.

Master button accordion player John Whelan hosts a free tune learning slow session on Zoom. The session starts at 2:30 pm Pacific time, lasts for about one hour, with a 30 minute break, and starting the Taking Time Slow Session at 4 pm Pacific.

Players and listeners of all levels are very welcome to enjoy playing or hearing favorite tunes at a moderate tempo, along with the all-important warmth of connection that shared music brings into our lives, even — or rather, especially — now.

This is also a great opportunity for learning new tunes, as everybody but the session leader (John) will be muted while they play. Unlike an in-person session you can noodle along to your heart’s content, and nobody will ever know unless you tell them.

John sends out the Zoom link and tune list to his newsletter subscribers every week, usually on Tuesday evening (Pacific time). Please make sure to sign up for his email newsletter, on his website, using the link below. That is all you need to do — no separate sign-up process required!

Whiskey Deaf is a Portland Bluegrass Band, playing traditional bluegrass, old-time and early country. This quartet features Annie Staninec, John Kael, Ethan Lawton and Forrest Marowitz. Annie‘s stellar fiddling and joyful vocals take center stage as they have on tour.

The County Fools are: Mark Klassen (guitar), Darian Santner (mandolin), Gerrit Vyn (banjo). John Wyatt (bass). They play authentic Northwest bluegrass.

Sunny South is one of the top bluegrass bands in the Portland, Oregon area, playing fiery bluegrass with tight harmonies and wonderful musicianship. Founding members Mike Stahlman (banjo) and Dave Elliott (mandolin) are joined by Steve Reischman (guitar), Dee Johnson (bass) and Nancy Padilla (fiddle).

Hosted by Julie Zamudio, this is a trad Irish tune slow session, held the fourth Saturday of each month. This session is a “lab” for practicing and polishing tunes that have been taught in the Tune Explorer sessions. The goal is to learn core tunes that are played most frequently in local Irish music sessions. Many of the tunes played at the session can be found on the TrailJams website, and in the Tune Explorer’s Tunebook (a free, downloadable PDF file).

Location: Tualatin Valley Fire Station 65, 3425 SW 103rd Avenue Beaverton, OR 97005 (just east of Highway 217, on Walker Rd.).

Beverages (nonalcoholic) are OK, but no food.

We open up a "room" on Zoom at 6 pm Pacific Time every Saturday evening. We start singing at 6:30 pm and we keep it going until the last person leaves. Feel free to come in anytime, and stay as long as you like. We run it kind of like a physical song circle. Everyone who wants to can sing once, and then we’ll do another round, and just keep going around as long as you like. Of course, it is totally fine to just listen and some people do. David Jacobs-Strain and Bob Beach are a multigenerational duo. Hailing from Eugene, OR, Jacobs-Strain is a striking guitar player with a deep love of blues and roots music. His voice is an unexpected delight of silky pure intonation. Bob Beach has been a professional musician for over 50 years. He adds the harmonica and flute to his vocals. Together the two reveal their broad scope of musical genres. David Jacobs-Strain writes songs and performs them and covers. He‘s also an accomplished guitarist, playing a Pogreba resonator guitar. His skill is as distinctive as the guitar. With comparable skills on the harmonica and flute, Bob Beach, from Pennsylvania, has more than 50 years as a working musician.
