Imagine 4 days and 3 nights in the Columbia River Gorge filled with bluegrass instruction and jamming for guitar, banjo, mandolin, fiddle, and bass. Bluegrass in the Gorge is for bluegrass players who want to improve their instrumental skills and enjoy making music with others. If you love bluegrass and want to take your skills and enjoyment to the next level, this is the long weekend for you!

Dave Keenan has gathered a staff composed of incredible musicians who are also great teachers: Amy Alvey, Hailey Pexton, Ethan Lawton, and Forrest Marowitz.

Menucha is a magical spot in the Columbia River Gorge. October is a beautiful time to be here. They‘ve got comfy beds, great rooms, porches and patios on which to gather and make music. This bluegrass camp has a capacity of 50.

34th Annual Pacific Northwest Sacred Harp Singing Convention - Oregon Session

Please join us in Portland on Saturday and Sunday October 17-18, 2026.

We will sing from the Sacred Harp 2025 edition (ivy book).

The singing will be at the Laurelhurst Club in SE Portland (3721 SE Ankeny St, Portland OR).

No previous singing experience is required, and newcomers are encouraged to attend. The singing is free and loaner books will be available.

Registration opens at 9 am. We will sing from 9:30-3 pm both days, with dinner on the grounds at noon.

The 21st annual conference of Folk Alliance Regional - West (FAR-West) takes place from Thursday, October 15th to Sunday, October 18th at the Doubletree by Hilton-Portland, 1000 NE Multnomah.

The conference begins at 4 pm on Thursday, and ends on Sunday at noon.

This year, FAR-West has chosen to honor Dave Alvin with the Best of the West Artist Lifetime Achievement Award, and the Portland FolkMusic Society with the Ambassador Award and will honor them on Saturday, October 17, at the Best of the West luncheon.

The ball workshops are designed for learning the dances on the ball program and are not intended to be an introduction to English country dance. Blair Borax: Born on the east coast, and home to the west, Blair Borax began her relationship with music unexpectedly in 2016, when a friend gifted her a cheap guitar. We believe great things happen when we play tunes together! People connect with each other and make friends, and we keep our music traditions alive by sharing tunes and passing them on. What’s more, playing tunes can make you feel happy, and if you do it often enough, you’ll notice that you are getting better at playing your instrument too!

It turns out that you don’t even have to be in the same place…great things still happen when we play music together, online from the comfort of your own home.

Phoenix Folk Ltd exists to promote participation and performance in folk and acoustic music, song and dance across the North East of England. We aim to be a friendly face of folk music, to help keep alive the great traditions of folk music and to encourage talent and personal musical development.

The Apricots, a Portland indie-folk band built around dreamy melodies, lush harmonies, and a little bit of magic. For this Laurelthirst residency in October, the band is stripping things back for a more intimate, raw, and close to the room set, letting the songs and three-part harmonies take center stage, 9 pm, free.

This is an open access session, so there’s no need to book in advance, you’re welcome to just turn up.

At our weekly singaround, you can perform a song to the rest of the group, just as you would in a regular folk club, or you can just join and listen to some live music. Tunes and poems are welcome too. When it’s your turn to perform, everyone else is muted on Zoom so that everyone can hear you.

Lots of space, good food, free soft drinks, discount on beer. This is a craft brewery, so there are LOTS of beers to choose from.

If you would like to build your old-time music repertoire while meeting and playing with others, then this class is for you. Tier Pricing: $80-300.

We meet for eight weeks and learn six old-time tunes and songs. Get group instruction on fiddle, clawhammer banjo, or guitar (basses, ukulele, and mandolin players may join the fiddle or guitar sections with advance approval).

We start each lesson in a large group, and the instructors play the tune we will work on that evening. Then, we slow it down and all sing the melody together to learn it by ear. We separate into different classrooms for group lessons on each instrument. Finally, we come back together and play the tune all together.

At the fourth meeting, we review the first three tunes and focus on harmony singing. For the final class meeting, we will meet early for a big community dinner and will play all the tunes we have learned during the session. In addition to class meetings, enrolled students will have access to source recordings, demonstration videos, guitar chord charts, and banjo tabs for each tune we teach.

Instructors are Maggie Lind – clawhammer banjo, Patrick Lind – guitar, Sophie Enloe –fiddle. Bass, ukulele, and mandolin players are welcome.

Previous experience on your instrument is required. If you are playing in the fiddle or banjo sections, you should be able to play several tunes in G/A and D/C tunings and be fairly comfortable picking out melody notes by ear, and we are working on developing this skill as well. Guitarists should have a capo, be familiar with the following open position chords: A, C, D, E, F, G, and be able to play the bass note/after strum or “boom chuck” technique.

Covid Policy:
We ask that you be vaccinated and up to date on your boosters to attend class. Please do not come to class if you are sick or experiencing any cold, flu, or COVID symptoms.

Open bluegrass jam at Tomorrow‘s Verse Taproom and Bottle Shop. Come join the jam every Tuesday with host Rich Landar. All levels of pickers are welcome to join in on the fun.

Don‘t play? Come listen! This will be a traditional style bluegrass circle, where people can join in as much as they‘d like.

Tony Becker of San Jose, California and Mark Wallis of Gloucester, England host this Transatlantic session for all interested parties on Wednesdays at 8:00 PM UK time. For American visitors, please note we are now all on standard ‘winter‘ time, so that is 12:00 PM Pacific in the USA.

Open to all who play traditional Irish music and It has the obvious limitations of Zoom in that only one musician can play at a time. But we go round the ‘room’ and take it in turns - no pressure though and the baton can be passed if you just want to listen. We just play for a couple of hours.

On a good day we have a variety of instruments from pipes to Melodeon, banjo to fiddle and it can be a good way to pick up tunes. It is very friendly and we welcome everyone. The only criterion is we try to stick to Irish traditional.

Come join this fun class hosted by Anne Weiss to build your strumming, picking and chord skills and build your repertoire, $170 for six sessions, drop-ins $30.

Golden Shoals knit together the worlds of traditional bluegrass and old time music, $23.36 advance/ $28.60 at the door (all prices include service fee). Golden Shoals is a fiddle and guitar duo that are no strangers to traditional music. Often switching instruments between fiddle, two guitars, and banjo, their original songs have been compared to Gillian Welch, with the added edge of instrumental prowess informed by energetic old time and bluegrass recordings. What started as casual jam sessions ten years ago in Boston, Massachusetts has transitioned into the internationally acclaimed cross-country duo Golden Shoals. The listener can expect the polished technique of conservatory training, in tandem with the grit, drive, and soul of musicians like Roscoe Holcomb or Ola Belle Reed. Morgan Harris (she/her) is a Portland, OR-based guitarist specializing in traditional North American string band music. In contrast to the purely accompanying role the guitar often occupies in this space, Morgan’s distinctive playing technique allows the guitar to shine as an old time melody instrument, creating a rhythmic drive and a multi-layered resonance that is unique in the world of flatpick guitar.

Join us every Thursday from 7–10 PM at The Hostel Cafe for our weekly Old Time Jam, a welcoming gathering for musicians who love traditional Appalachian tunes, fiddle music, and acoustic string-band sessions.

The FallSong Festival is Portland FolkMusic Society’s annual on-line worldwide event, taking place this year from 1 PM, Friday October 23, through 5 PM Sunday October 25, 2025 (all times Pacific).

FallSong is a place to enjoy the best folk music from many different traditions. FallSong consists of song circles, workshops and mini-concerts presented by the participants. As FallSong approaches, we will keep you posted about the events that will be available.

Guided by participant evaluations, the event has jelled into its current format, with lots and lots of song circles, and a few other events, including workshops, mini-concerts and All Participant Gatherings.

FallSong consists mostly of events offered by participants like you. If you would like to lead a song circle or a workshop, or offer a 20 minute long mini-concert, you can let us know when you register.

Welcome to Songwriter Soiree 150: LEGACY. Our monthly flagship event! Come play an original song — or simply come enjoy the music and community, all ages, all welcome.

If you‘re in the area, come celebrate 150 Soirees and 17 years of music, connection, and belonging as we kick off in our new space!

NEW VENUE: This month‘s Soiree will be held at the inspiring Rae Lofts in the central east side. This is an amazing venue, with a full bar and cafe. And all ages! There will be space to lounge as usual, sit or dance. Full sound system, piano provided as usual!

Bring an original song to share—or simply come listen, connect, and get inspired. (We may have some special surprises!) Bring a picnic, bring some friends, and bring a song if you‘d like to share one. Or simply come listen!

Revel in a heartfelt and inspiring living room style evening. Sing a song, read a poem, or just lay back and take in the music!

Artichoke Community Music class hosted by Megan Cronin, $175 for seven sessions, drop-ins $30 per session. This class will be held at Taborspace, an off-site location.

This class is for beginner-ish and intermediate violin and fiddle players who want a chance to play their favorite songs with others in a supportive setting. At the start of this series the instructor will present 10 tunes in the genres of folk, jazz, bluegrass, Irish, blues, pop and/or classical. Students will vote in three of these tunes to work on over the course of the term.

This class is open to either those who would like to learn the basics of vulnerable songwriting or for songwriters who would like a supportive environment to practice infusing more emotion into their songs. We will share original music as well as examine music by other songwriters.

This class is intended to be a safe space for songwriters and budding songwriters to bounce sensitive ideas off peers without judgement or harsh criticism.

The FallSong Festival is Portland FolkMusic Society’s annual on-line worldwide event, taking place this year from 1 PM, Friday October 23, through 5 PM Sunday October 25, 2025 (all times Pacific).

FallSong is a place to enjoy the best folk music from many different traditions. FallSong consists of song circles, workshops and mini-concerts presented by the participants. As FallSong approaches, we will keep you posted about the events that will be available.

Guided by participant evaluations, the event has jelled into its current format, with lots and lots of song circles, and a few other events, including workshops, mini-concerts and All Participant Gatherings.

FallSong consists mostly of events offered by participants like you. If you would like to lead a song circle or a workshop, or offer a 20 minute long mini-concert, you can let us know when you register.

Old-Time Music Hostel Takeover is a new twice-yearly mini-music festival in Portland, OR October 22-25, 2026

Help support the NW Portland Hostel and join your fellow musicians jamming, socializing, and enjoying meals together at the Old-Time Music Hostel Takeover. This fun weekend will help support our favorite Portland jamming and party hostel during a difficult time, when fewer people are traveling internationally! This event is a smaller version of the Portland Old-Time Music Gathering.

Everyone who wants to can sing once, and then we’ll do another round, and just keep going around as long as you like. Of course, it is totally fine to just listen and some people do. Blending the rich musical traditions of the Missouri Ozarks and Canada’s Ottawa Valley, Newberry & Verch deliver an evening of songs, stories, and high-energy performance that feels both timeless and deeply personal. Newberry, a master of clawhammer banjo and a soulful vocalist, pairs seamlessly with Verch, a champion fiddler and world-renowned step dancer. Together, they weave original compositions with traditional tunes, creating a lively program that often has audiences tapping their feet—or dancing in the aisles.
