Puget Sound Guitar Workshop – Undeniably the world’s greatest guitar festival and a camp for all acoustic instruments and genres, it has now expanded to four weeks of camp, each with a different flavor and different instructors.

For over 30 years our “Summit of the Song” has brought together some of our favorite songwriters of all genres to the Planet Bluegrass Ranch in Lyons, CO for three days of music, camping, and inspiration.

Seisiún na nÓg is our monthly youth session lead by our Youth Officer Niamh Branigan. Youth are welcome to sit in to listen and chat with young musicians about learning Irish music; or bring their instrument and strike up an Irish tune they might be learning currently.

Come join the fun on the 2nd and 4th Sundays! Portland Bluegrass Sunday Jam every 2nd and 4th Sundays at Artichoke, $5 cover at the door or online without fees.

This is a live, in-person, and open Bluegrass jam from 1-4 pm. Acoustic only please, and all levels of experience welcome.

Every 2nd Sunday and 4th Sunday join the Cajun Jam as a musician, dancer, or just come and listen to the music. It‘s free and you can bring your drinks/snacks into the Community Room with you. There‘s some room to dance on the nice wooden floor.

The Cajun Jam is now being held in the Community Room at the Kennedy School. It’s a great space with room for both dancers and musicians.

On Sunday afternoons, the Hostel Café in Portland, Oregon provides a friendly setting for this TrailJams Irish traditional tune session. TrailJams is a music community focused on making acoustic music together outside for the enjoyment of the musicians and of people passing by. The cozy café makes a great place to keep the music going in the winter. In better weather, the tune playing moves out to the café’s courtyard. Guests of the Hostel Café and the adjoining Northwest Portland Hostel are likely to settle at one of the nearby tables to enjoy the music.

NOTE: No session on Jun 7 (Sun) to make space for the Community Gathering.

Please be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 if you are joining this session — that is a request, not a requirement.

The 2nd Sunday English Dance for Experienced Dancers is an opportunity to dance to the music of Fine Companions (and friends), suggested donation $10-20 sliding scale, dance shoes required, no street shoes permitted beyond the entrance.

The dances will be a balance of familiar dances and unfamiliar dances. The callers will encourage dancers to incorporate style points such as quality of movement, timing, transitions and dancing with the music.

We ask that dancers be comfortable dancing standard English Dance figures including:
- Heys in various orientations
- Regular and Double figure eights
- Triple minor progressions
- Dancing with couples outside of your group of 4
- Straight and draw poussettes.

Mask Policy:
PCDC has authorized committees to make decisions about masking policies for their own events. All regular Contra and English dances will be mask-optional. Check the upcoming dances information to verify status of a dance.

COVID Policy:
PCDC no longer requires proof of vaccination, but we continue to encourage everyone to be vaccinated. While currently available COVID-19 vaccines no longer do much to prevent transmission, they continue to be effective for protecting oneself from more serious illness.

We hope you’ll join us as we welcome the How Long Jug Band back to the Beer Hall! Live Music is always free, all ages, and takes place on our covered and heated patio!

The How Long Jug Band is based in Portland, Oregon and plays vintage blues, jazz and ragtime music on standard and homemade instruments.

Inspired by the great jug bands of the 1920’s and 30’s, the How Long Jug Band blends kazoos, washboards and jugs seamlessly with conventional guitars, mandolins and banjos. While they sometimes slip a modern song into the mix, the How Longs mostly draw from early blues, ragtime and jazz, digging into obscure songs to find lyrics and arrangements that are too good to be forgotten.

Come join our open Irish session at Garage Door. Sessions will be hosted by Mikela Valenzuela, an avid Celtic fiddler and local teacher. We believe great things happen when we play tunes together! People connect with each other and make friends, and we keep our music traditions alive by sharing tunes and passing them on. What’s more, playing tunes can make you feel happy, and if you do it often enough, you’ll notice that you are getting better at playing your instrument too!

It turns out that you don’t even have to be in the same place…great things still happen when we play music together, online from the comfort of your own home.

Phoenix Folk Ltd exists to promote participation and performance in folk and acoustic music, song and dance across the North East of England. We aim to be a friendly face of folk music, to help keep alive the great traditions of folk music and to encourage talent and personal musical development.

Portland Country Dance Community (PCDC) sponsors an English Country Dance (ECD) slow jam on the 2nd and 4th Mondays from 7-9 pm in the community room at McMenamins Kennedy School, 5736 NE 33rd Ave, Portland, OR 97211.

The events are free and open to all acoustic musicians, whether you play by dots or by ear.

The ECD jam plays tunes from the Barnes Collection. If you don’t have the books, we’re happy to share. Come make music with us!!

Calling all aficianados of jug band music - acoustic instruments only. Portland Jug Band Jam at the Oakshire Beer Hall every 2nd Monday - outside in the tent.

Featured artists will bring some different songs and arrangements to the jam.

Oakshire is now open till 10 pm and serves pizza, salads and snacks. Outside food is still welcome. There‘s also a food cart on site and a couple more nearby. Keep up to date on the jam by going to the Facebook link above to join the group and get on the email list to get all the info on the jams.

At our weekly singaround, you can perform a song to the rest of the group, just as you would in a regular folk club, or you can just join and listen to some live music. Tunes and poems are welcome too. When it’s your turn to perform, everyone else is muted on Zoom so that everyone can hear you.

If you’d like us to record your performance so that you have a copy to keep, then we’re very happy to do so. We’re always willing to offer advice to help you to get the best sound quality when performing online, so do get in touch if you have any questions.

Mr. Ben will be playing family-friendly music at the Hostel Cafe every Tuesday at 5pm in our Commons (or the Courtyard, when the weather is nice)! Come enjoy great music and delicious food as your kids get entertained through dinner.

Open bluegrass jam at Tomorrow‘s Verse Taproom and Bottle Shop. Come join the jam every Tuesday with host Rich Landar. All levels of pickers are welcome to join in on the fun.

Don‘t play? Come listen! This will be a traditional style bluegrass circle, where people can join in as much as they‘d like.

The music corner fills with super talented female musicians and the room overflows with their fantastic music.

The “Forty Drop Few” are a trio, originally from the southwest, that play popular music of the early 1900s, free, 21+.

They perform in various styles from the era as a string band and are influenced by nothing other than the old 78 records that they love so well. Their main influences include New Orleans jazz, southwestern fiddle music, classic banjo rags, black string band music, hillbilly harmonies and unique vocals.

The trio consists of Ethan and Candra Francis and Elliot Kennedy who all currently reside in Portland, Oregon. The couple, also known as “Stone and Sue”, have been playing music together for close to a decade and met Kennedy who joined them 4 years ago. The three are inseparable and spend all of their time picking apart old tunes, listening to 78s, throwing shows in Portland and traveling around the country together.

Accordionist extraordinaire Mike Beglan and multi-instrumentalist Nancy Conescu share with us their love of traditional Irish music.

Groove-oriented free-range Roots duo, Lauren Sheehan and Pete Krebs are known throughout the northwest for their fine instrumental prowess and vintage instruments, warm vocals, quirky repertoire and breadth of material.

Collectively, they have over 70 years of performances and recording history, ranging from major festivals to house concerts, folk societies to dive bars. Expect guitars, lap steel, mandolin, harmony singing and, what ever else their fancy suggests that night, including a good time.

Traditional American music, folk and traditional musics from a variety of sources including early country recordings from the 20s and 30s.

Sessions are led by Marina Dodgson (fiddle) and Maurice Condie (guitar). These are open access sessions, so there’s no need to book in advance, you’re welcome to just turn up and join in!

We believe great things happen when we play tunes together! People connect with each other and make friends, and we keep our music traditions alive by sharing tunes and passing them on. What’s more, playing tunes can make you feel happy, and if you do it often enough, you’ll notice that you are getting better at playing your instrument too!

It turns out that you don’t even have to be in the same place…great things still happen when we play music together, online from the comfort of your own home.

Phoenix Folk Ltd exists to promote participation and performance in folk and acoustic music, song and dance across the North East of England. We aim to be a friendly face of folk music, to help keep alive the great traditions of folk music and to encourage talent and personal musical development.

Japanese guitarist and singer Hiroya Tsukamoto leads the next Portland Folkmusic Society‘s Global Folksong Workshop, Tsukamoto, who grew up in Kyoto, Japan, and lives in New York, is best known for his superb guitar playing -- among his distinctions is taking second place at the International Fingerstyle Guitar Championship both in 2018 and 2022, all ages, $10 advance/$12 door. For this event Tsukamoto will focus on singing, and teaching participants to sing, a couple Japanese folk songs. “One is a traditional folk song called ‘Asadoya Yunta’ from Okinawa, Southern part of Japan,” Tsukamoto explained. ”Prior to Japan, Okinawa was an kingdom called Ryukyu Kingdom which lasted about five hundred years. During that time, people had developed own unique culture including folk music and dance.” He also plans to teach “’Oboro Zukiyo,’ which could be translated as ‘Misty Moon.’ It was composed in 1912, after the Meiji Restoration. Around that time, a lot of things came into Japan from Western countries, including classical music. Japanese composers incorporated Japanese folk with Western classical influences and composed some beautiful songs.”

With the return of good weather, the outdoor tune session resumes Thursday afternoons in the Butterfly Garden in Cook Park, Tigard, Oregon.

Let’s get together to play some tunes outside!

This is a weekly event in the good-weather months. Slow session, with plenty of room to split off a faster session. This is a repeating event, weather permitting — check Event News for changes.

The Butterfly Garden in Cook Park, Tigard, has wide open space where we can gather in shade, sunshine, or shelter.

Bring a chair and an instrument. The park is a great place to take a walk or have a picnic before or after the session. If you come with companions, there is plenty of room for them to roam among the trees and trails and by the river if they want a break from the tune playing.

Where we are gathering: as you enter the park via SW 92nd Ave, turn left at the open gate and head toward Shelter 4 (the park’s website has a map). We’ll gather on the lawn near Shelter 4, at the entrance to the Butterfly Garden. We’ll pick a shady spot if it’s a warm day, or grab a sunny spot if it’s a cool day. If it’s rainy we’ll get under the roof of Shelter 4.

Psych-folk chanteuse Kassi Valazza brings her full PDX band in for an evening of song! The evening will start with the witty and wise songs of Chris Acker, $15 advance, or cash at the door, 21+. Kassi stands as a stoic, dreamy, freak-folk mistress with a sound and feel that is truly timeless. Her haunting vocals, spacious soundscapes, and cut-to-the-core images in her songs will draw you deeply into her web of visions. In a genre full of tall tales and marketable lies, Chris Acker crafts candid songs – weaving his wit and woes into a body of work that exposes the stale plight of the American songster to the honest, and sometimes hilarious, light of day.

4th Saturday - Mary - Bringing a musician’s ear to the collective with a focus on older country and Western swing from the ‘30s to the ‘70s, always with a good dose of women artists.

5th Saturday - Gary - Countrypolitan Blues - A mix of eastern philosophy and western swing; the yin, the yang, and the do-si-do.

Puget Sound Guitar Workshop – Undeniably the world’s greatest guitar festival and a camp for all acoustic instruments and genres, it has now expanded to four weeks of camp, each with a different flavor and different instructors.

NOTE: 2026 Summer Camp Weeks 1, 3 & 4 are currently full. However we encourage you to get on the waitlist for those weeks. There is still space in Week 2.

Hello! This is a welcome invitation to join together for an in-person gathering of Portland FolkMusic Society members. Bring your own picnic and chair or blanket. Bring your musical instrument(s), your voice, and song(s) to share! Bring a friend… We are looking forward to seeing everyone—weather permitting. Let’s hope for fine weather, but—especially—no rain. Clouds won’t stop us. Hope to see you there!

The Portland Songwriters Association hosts an open forum of songwriters dedicated to helping each other write great songs. The workshop was created to provide songwriters an opportunity to present their latest works in progress, and have those songs critiqued by other songwriters.

Guidelines for the Workshops:

1. Bring approximately 10 lyric sheets and type lyrics exactly as they appear on CD or tape. You may perform your song live, if you prefer (If you bring a tape, cue it to the beginning of the song).

2. Avoid lengthy intros and instrumental solos. Because time is short at the workshops, we ask that your song be no longer than 3 minutes. Feel free to omit solos, intros, and outros.

3. Focus your feedback on the lyrics and melody of the song. (Production comments may be noted on the lyric sheet and returned to the writer)

4. Be constructive, helpful, friendly, instructional in your critique of others‘ songs. A positive and encouraging atmosphere makes these workshops fun for everyone. Be honest, be considerate. Everyone is encouraged to speak.

5. Be open-minded to the feedback you receive from others. The goal is to help make everyone‘s songs that much better.

Come enjoy harp company in Artichoke’s cozy cafe, a fabulous space for making community music.

A harp circle is a gathering of harp players who meet regularly to share music with each other. The program varies from circle to circle, but in general, a harp circle is a good place to learn new music and skills, meet other players, see different types of harps, and become more comfortable with public performing.

Harp players are encouraged to share a tune or play along. Play-along tune book on site, solos most welcome. Suggested book is Kim Robertson‘s Celtic Harp Solos. Open to all levels of players, and listeners welcome too.

This will be primarily held in the main venue but some months we may have to move it upstairs in the front classroom.

Weekend matinees go on from 1-3 pm, free, all ages.

Everyone who wants to can sing once, and then we’ll do another round, and just keep going around as long as you like. Of course, it is totally fine to just listen and some people do. Luciano Marazzo is a classical guitarist whose repertoire spans centuries—from the refined intricacies of Renaissance and Baroque masters like Leopold Weiss and J.S. Bach to the vibrant, emotive works of contemporary composers such as Astor Piazzolla and Andrew York. While he explores a broad spectrum of styles, Luciano is especially drawn to the music of J.S. On Sunday afternoons, the Hostel Café in Portland, Oregon provides a friendly setting for this TrailJams Irish traditional tune session. TrailJams is a music community focused on making acoustic music together outside for the enjoyment of the musicians and of people passing by. The cozy café makes a great place to keep the music going in the winter. In better weather, the tune playing moves out to the café’s courtyard. Guests of the Hostel Café and the adjoining Northwest Portland Hostel are likely to settle at one of the nearby tables to enjoy the music.

NOTE: No session on Jun 7 (Sun) to make space for the Community Gathering.
