On Sunday afternoons, the Hostel Café in Portland, Oregon provides a friendly setting for this TrailJams Irish traditional tune session. TrailJams is a music community focused on making acoustic music together outside for the enjoyment of the musicians and of people passing by. The cozy café makes a great place to keep the music going in the winter. In better weather, the tune playing moves out to the café’s courtyard. Guests of the Hostel Café and the adjoining Northwest Portland Hostel are likely to settle at one of the nearby tables to enjoy the music.

COVID Policy:
Please be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 if you are joining this session — that is a request, not a requirement.

Jump into Artichoke Music’s Songwriters Circle hosted by Kelly Brightwell and Woody Moran, held every 3rd Sunday of the month from 2 pm - 4 pm in the venue, free (donations support Artichoke).

Bring your Instrument (piano available) and original songs, or even the occasional cover, to share with others.

This is also a great opportunity to listen and gain insight from other songwriters as they play their original songs. This is not a jam.

What happens when you pair a gravel-voiced groove master with a sensitive Americana-infused soul? When you mix the detailed observations of a world traveler with storytelling that brings emotional landscapes to life? You get the award-winning songwriting team of Brightwell & Moran.

We’re excited to bring back the Portland Radio Project (PRP) Open Mic — a welcoming stage for local musicians and music lovers alike.

Join us Sunday, March 15 at The Riff at B-Side Records & Vintage on SE Main in Milwaukie as we relaunch this community tradition.

Musicians, bring what you need and come share your sound — acoustic or electric. A backline will be available.

And yes — it’s free, all ages. No cover, no sign-up fee. Just a room full of people supporting local music.

This is an all-ages event and a safe, inclusive space where everyone belongs — and every genre has a place.

Or just come hang out and discover your next favorite local artist.

Sign-ups start at 5 pm. The PRP Open Mic will take place every third Sunday of the month, creating a regular space for local musicians to perform, connect, and discover each other.

The Riff — an all-ages, inclusive space that makes this open mic possible.

At PRP, supporting local music isn’t just something we broadcast — it’s something we build. The Open Mic is one more way we create space for artists to connect, perform, and grow.

We hope to see you there.

Ubuntu -- Solidarity. Joy. Liberation. No admission charge, $20 donation accepted.

“I am because we are” is the basic translation of Ubuntu. Ubuntu is about belonging. That we belong to each other because our personhood is connected to the personhood of someone else.

A loved one. A friend. A neighbor. A stranger.

Our humanity is rooted in the relationships that we hold with people. People that we have both met and not met–consciously, subconsciously, and unconsciously. It is a testament to the undeniable fact that we are tethered to each other, whether we know them or not. That an action or an encounter can have a ripple effect on our immediate time and place, as well as somewhere halfway across the world.

While this year’s Cultural Focus explores how we co-exist in this world, as the last part of our series, it also underscores the journey that people take to reach that co-existence.

Local performers kick off the Festival with Songs for Tomorrow, a Filk community singalong, at noon Friday May 22nd at the Choral Courtyard of the Cornish Playhouse off Mercer Street. Callie Hills, Jeffrey Cornish, Paul Kwinn, and Cecelia Eng will be leading the singing. Come join us and represent!

Then Cecelia has a solo performance Saturday May 23rd from 12:40 pm - 1:10 pm at the Folklife Rotunda Cafe.

Start the weekend off right with Johnny Wheels and the Swamp Donkeys, $25.75, minors OK with parent/guardian (doors: 7 pm, show: 8 pm). They are joined by legendary drummer Tony Coleman who has had an illustrious career touring the world with B.B. King, Otis Clay, Bobby Blue Bland, Johnnie Taylor, Albert King, Albert Collins, Etta James, James Cotton, Katie Webster, Z.Z. Hill, O.V. Wright and Buddy Guy. The son of a traveling bass player and singer, Johnny “Wheels” Kennicott had music in his blood since birth, but expressing himself musically took on new importance when Johnny broke his neck in a childhood accident, leaving him paralyzed from the chest down. Johnny found, through determined trial and error, he could manipulate his paralyzed diaphragm to not only sing, but also blow the harmonica. Since that time, Johnny has been traveling the Pacific Northwest music scene, spreading the gospel of the blues. Although the Swamp Donkeys, including Brandon Logan and Taylor Frazier, are typically tagged as a blues band, the diversity of the members’ musical backgrounds becomes evident as the worlds of R&B, soul, jazz, funk and rock are blended under a blues umbrella. Local up-and-coming blues band Sleeper Wave opens the show. Since formation, they have performed at many local venues, and won the Cascade Blues Association Youth Journey to Memphis challenge: a strong testament to their musical talent.
