Why Create a PFS Endowment?
Published in Local Lore - May/June 2021

IMAGINE FOR A MOMENT

  • IF you could help enable the next Joan Baez, Woody Guthrie, Joni Mitchell, Pete Seeger,…
  • IF your passion for folk music could be shared by many others in our community...
  • IF you could play a part in making the Portland Folk Music Society (PFS) world renowned…
  • IF you could help to assure that folk music and PFS are around for many years to come...

A PFS Endowment Fund will create an ongoing source of income to help fund future activities of the PFS organization in perpetuity, furthering our mission “to preserve, present and promote folk music and arts within the greater Portland area”.

Portland Folk Music Society Endowment Fund distributions can possibly help fund PFS program expansion to enable scholarships for gifted musicians, fund workshops, special concerts, a lecture series, funding a festival, or other new exciting events and opportunities for the PFS community. Per the Endowment Policy (posted on PFS website), the actual use of the money is up to the Board of Directors at the time.

You have a once in a lifetime opportunity to become a PFS Endowment Fund “FOUNDING DONOR” helping us to launch the PFS Endowment Fund. To have a place in history, a legacy, a sense of immortality...

If you are truly passionate about folk music and love PFS, here is your opportunity to become part of a legacy!

Donations of any amount are welcome. To become a “Founding Donor”, please make your check of $500 or more, payable to “The PFS Endowment Fund” and send your gift to:

PFS

P.O. Box 1448

Portland, OR 97207-1448

It takes time to grow a significant and meaningful Endowment Fund. The objective is to fund the Endowment with the expectation that PFS will get about 4% of earnings each year with the remaining earnings and new contributions helping to grow the fund.

Each year, the PFS Board of Directors will review the expected distribution from the Endowment and determine what activities to fund that align with the PFS mission. Or, they can roll the money back into the Endowment to help it grow more rapidly.

An endowment fund builds a pipeline and infrastructure for future gifts. Once we achieve sufficient funds, we expect to move the money to a professional foundation for management. This will enable PFS to accept assets such as stock as well as bequests upon the death of a donor. These types of gifts to PFS will also enhance our ability to better serve the PFS community.

Thank you for your ongoing support of the Portland Folk Music Society.
