Glen Hansard, the Irish songwriter, poet, storyteller and bard, was a musician’s musician. Most well-known for the Oscar-winning music from the indie film, Once, including the song "Falling Slowly," Glen’s imprint on independent folk and rock spread much farther than the night of the Oscars.

From street busking, to his Irish rock band The Frames, to his collaboration with Markéta Irglová and the Swell Season, to his solo work that shaped the last two decades of his career, Glen’s songwriting had a backbone of honesty that can be hard to find.

His dedication to the spirit and mysticism of song inspired thousands of independent artists the world over to find a hopeful, more vulnerable side, and express themselves through whatever artistic means they have.

In the wake of his untimely passing on July 29th, 2026 from a motorcycle accident, Glen’s positive impact was seen in the outpouring of grief across the world. Portland friends and fans are gathering for a celebration of life and songs for Glen Hansard with a night of song and poetry from some of Portland’s favorite local songwriters at the Alberta Rose Theatre.
