Events - Week View

The LaConner Guitar Festival is something different. It is not a festival of guitar players, but of guitar makers, or luthiers. Nevertheless, there are plenty of the things you want at a guitar festival: workshops (on advanced guitar playing), small afternoon concerts, large evening concerts, mini concerts, and a festival cabaret in an open-mic setting. Then there are special events that cover the process of guitar making.

Held May 17-19 at LaConner WA in beautiful Skagit county (north of Seattle), advance prices are quite reasonable: three-day passes are $40/single-day passes $15.

NOTE: Concerts and workshops are NOT included in General Admission and require separately purchased tickets. Workshops $30 advance, concerts $20 advance/$25 at the box office.

Kelly Brightwell & Woody Moran lead a song circle at The Artichoke every 3rd Sunday of the month. Bring your instrument, bring your songs (original or cover), bring your voice and let’s share some songs around the circle, suggested donation $5-$10 (doors open at 12:30 pm).

Americana artist Kelly Brightwell and folk-rocker Woody Moran serve up catchy harmonies and heartfelt messages with a sound reminiscent of The Civil Wars, Birds of Chicago, and UK band The Shires. The award-winning songwriters perform as a duo and with a full band in the Pacific Northwest region, playing house concerts, listening rooms and festival stages.

Artichoke Community Music song circle led by the Soldier Songs and Voices Team.

We welcome all veterans and current military to bring your acoustic instruments and share a song or two, covers and/or originals. Song books will be available.

Soldier Songs and Voices provides free songwriting workshops and guitar and voice instruction to veterans of all eras. We believe that everyone has a story to tell and that telling it in song is a path to a happier and healthier life. Loaner guitars are available. Live music on the patio, free. Every fourth Sunday, we welcome How Long Jug Band!

Inspired by the great jug bands of the 1920s and 30s, the How Long Jug Band blends kazoos, washboards and jugs seamlessly with conventional guitars, mandolins and banjos. While they sometimes slip a modern song into the mix, the How Longs mostly draw from early blues, ragtime and jazz, digging into obscure songs to find lyrics and arrangements that are too good to be forgotten.

The Everyone Welcome Community Choir is a non-audition singing class and choir rolled into one, where the number one reason for returning is FUN. Led by Anne Weiss, $165 for seven weeks or $30 drop-in. Register at the Artichoke Music website using the link provided.

Instead of "choral" music, we use songs from around the world: African, folk, gospel, Balkan, rounds, reggae, and more! We focus on pitch, breath, harmony, rhythm, and... did I mention fun? Any skill level, any age. Bring your family, bring your friends.

At our weekly singaround, you can perform a song to the rest of the group, just as you would in a regular folk club, or you can just join and listen to some live music. Tunes and poems are welcome too. When it’s your turn to perform, everyone else is muted on Zoom so that everyone can hear you.

Take advantage of the weekly lesson for beginners and then stay for the dance ‘til 9:30. Instructors rotate weekly and each brings their own curated playlist of classic and contemporary zydeco and Cajun music. Zydeco, two-step, waltz, blues, swing.

Tony Becker of San Jose, California and Mark Wallis of Gloucester, England host this Transatlantic session for all interested parties on Wednesdays at 8:00 PM UK time. For American visitors, please note we are now all on standard ‘winter‘ time, so that is 12:00 PM Pacific in the USA.

Open to all who play traditional Irish music and It has the obvious limitations of Zoom in that only one musician can play at a time. But we go round the ‘room’ and take it in turns - no pressure though and the baton can be passed if you just want to listen. We just play for a couple of hours.

On a good day we have a variety of instruments from pipes to Melodeon, banjo to fiddle and it can be a good way to pick up tunes. It is very friendly and we welcome everyone. The only criterion is we try to stick to Irish traditional.

Artichoke Community Music School class led by Avery Hill, $80 per participant (no drop-in) for four classes.

If you‘ve been to Artichoke‘s Monthly ‘Ukulele Jams, you know we keep it fun and encourage everyone to "choose their own adventure" as we play through songs with a variety of levels of difficulty. Here?s your chance to spend more time with some of those tougher songs, to help improve your ?ukulele jam experience! Using popular and accessible songs, we’ll expand our repertoire of musical skills and technique in the process. For example, we‘ll learn some new chords, various strumming / fingerpicking patterns, and occasional riffs and fills to complement our playing.

Thursday Night Coffeehouse is a celebration of up to four local and touring artists coming together in an intimate, coffeehouse setting, at the venerable Artichoke Community Music - it is a wonderful opportunity to hear artists of all levels in a listening room setting. Beer, wine, soft drinks, and light snacks are available for purchase at the bar, $10.

Vince Radostitz and Kacey Farrens - A Modern Folk Lounge Act
Vince Radostitz a lifelong singer and guitar player, has only in the last few years started writing and sharing his own songs. His songs are lyrically driven, heartfelt, and occasionally clever, at least in his mind. When singing with musical partner Kacey Farrens, tight vocal harmonies are always on offer.

The Prairie Benders Duo
Original and distinctly dark Americana/folk rock sound, perfect for boot scootin‘ or cryin‘ in your beer. The Prairie Benders Duo is the creative vision of singer-songwriter Jason Ferris and fiddle player Meghan Coil.

13th & Louis
Two best friends playing original songs with intricate musicianship and harmonies.

13th & Louis is a folk duo made up of Kristin Bond and Luke Lillard. Both multi-instrumentalists and singer/songwriters, they enjoy trading instruments and letting each other take the lead. Their songs range from playful to heart wrenching, and everything in between, embracing what it is to be fully human.

Just $10/week for the Winds of Donegal classes. Every Thursday we teach you the basics of the three‘s, seven‘s and jig steps so that you can enjoy the live music ceilis around Portland and Ireland. Classes are geared toward 13 and older. Bring a water bottle and wear comfortable shoes not heels.

Mask Policy:
PCDC has authorized committees to make decisions about masking policies for their own events. All contra dances are mask-optional at this time. English dances are alternating between those that require masks and those that do not. Check the upcoming dances information to verify status of a dance.

COVID Policy:
PCDC no longer requires proof of vaccination, but we continue to encourage everyone to be vaccinated.

Music in the country style, including western & western swing, cowboy & country blues, country folk, bluegrass, rockabilly, hillbilly, Americana, and honky tonk. hosted by Robert Parish, Wayne and Kathy Johnson, Wayne Selzer, Mary Rondthaler, and Gary Baysinger.

1st Saturday - Robert Parish along with son Graham play sets featuring particular artists as well as sets with a variety of artist.

2nd Saturday, Wayne and Kathy - Variety of country, western, western swing, country folk, country blues, bluegrass, rockabilly and Americana.

3rd Saturday - Will Selzer - Blends all types & styles of country music from 50+ years, rooted in mid-20th century, men and women artists equally. The goal is to entertain our listeners and to have fun.

4th Saturday - Mary - Bringing a musician’s ear to the collective with a focus on older country and Western swing from the ‘30s to the ‘70s, always with a good dose of women artists.

5th Saturday - Gary - Countrypolitan Blues - A mix of eastern philosophy and western swing; the yin, the yang, and the do-si-do.

Meraki marks the 3rd chapter of our 5-year Cultural Focus storyline. Meraki derives from the Greek language and means doing something with passion, soul, and love.

May 27 (Mon) at 5:30 - 6 pm: Siena Christie will be performing at the Storm Welcome Stage.

Artichoke Community Music School class led by Steve Cheseborough, $100 for four classes.

Tom’s folk music program is going on 35 years and one of the longest running music radio shows around.

You can listen on www.folkmusicnotebook.com on Saturday at 4 pm PST and repeated again on Sunday at 1 am.

Urban and country blues with R&B, soul, jazz, zydeco and classic rock, every Saturday from 5-7 pm.

We open up a "room" on Zoom at 6 pm Pacific Time every Saturday evening. We start singing at 6:30 pm and we keep it going until the last person leaves. Feel free to come in anytime, and stay as long as you like. We run it kind of like a physical song circle. Everyone who wants to can sing once, and then we’ll do another round, and just keep going around as long as you like. Of course, it is totally fine to just listen and some people do. We are excited to host Portland Bluegrass Sunday Jam every 2nd and 4th Sundays (and 5th when it happens) at Artichoke, $5 cover at the door.

This is a live, in-person, and open Bluegrass jam from 1-4 pm. Acoustic only please, and all levels of experience welcome.

Uilleann piper Preston Howard Wilde leads an Irish piping session - it’s a wonderful way to spend a Sunday afternoon!

Soldier Songs and Voices provides free songwriting workshops and guitar and voice instruction to veterans of all eras. We believe that everyone has a story to tell and that telling it in song is a path to a happier and healthier life. Loaner guitars are available. Previous musical experience and skill are not required. Just bring your curiosity and willingness to unleash your creativity. For the foreseeable future classes meet online.
