Although it may look like a toy or appear superficially similar to a recorder, the tinwhistle or pennywhistle is capable of all kinds of wonderful music and emotive depth and is highly versatile in its own right. Played by people of all ages, it is used by both amateurs and virtuoso professionals, alike. This class will start with the basics of the pennywhistle: scales, breath control, bedrock ornamentation and technique, slides and bends, tongue technique and more.

Artichoke Community Music online class led by Tracey Rose Brown, $25 for one class. This harp class explores a few tunes, originally Gaelic language songs/pipe tunes from the Isle of Raasay, Inner Hebrides, Scotland. The tunes are from the Elizabeth Ross MS (1880-02), an insightful resource to Celtic music of that time and place, music that still sparkles today...enter ornaments! Tracey Rose developed this class as part of receiving a study scholarship from Slighe nan Gaidheal, Seattle, to study in a 6 day intensive with Scottish harper Ingrid Henderson of the Isle of Skye in 2018. Level: beginner with a little experience and up, audits welcome, all harp types welcome.

Artichoke Community Music online class led by Zac Leger, $80 for four classes.

Tunes for All Humans/All Instruments! The idea behind this class is very simple: give you two to three new tunes a week and enlarge the amount of tunes you can play and share with other musicians. Tunes will be broken down carefully and into bite-sized pieces to make them easy to pick up by ear. Then we will play the tunes slowly and relaxed, giving your muscle memory time to truly learn the tune! No more only half remembering a tune at a jam or wishing you could play that one you heard at the session but just did not have time to record or memorize!

Led by Maggie Lind (clawhammer banjo), Patrick Lind (guitar), and the return of Sophie Enloe (fiddle). Previous experience on your instrument is required. If you are playing in the fiddle or banjo sections, you should be fairly comfortable picking out melody notes by ear but we are working on developing this skill as well. Guitarists should be familiar with the following open position chords: A, C, D, E, F, G and able to play the bass note/after strum or “boom chuck” technique.

Cost for the 8 week session is sliding scale $160 – $125 per student. If you choose to skip the group zoom lessons you may have access to the online portion of the fall session for $80. Please email Maggie to register.

Pay what you can afford and email maggiebanjo (at) gmail.com if you have financial need. We offer scholarships and we want our classes to be accessible to all. We are happy for you to share one registration fee per household during this time, especially if you are financially impacted by the pandemic. This will be a unique online workshop, led by Tracy Kim, $120 for four workshops.Drop-ins are welcome at $35 per class. Contact Tracy.

For the past year, due to Covid, many of my students have purchased loop pedals. This online live workshop is specifically designed for you and your loop pedal!

This is an online class via Zoom. You will receive a link and password along with materials prior to first class from Tracy. For all levels, however, basic guitar experience is recommended.

Whether it’s jamming on some 12 bar blues, folk rock, jazz, or just a riff, it’s been quite fun to share some ideas relating looping.

Using a loop pedal can be extremely fun and educational. However, there’s a slight learning curve and I’ll share some tips, plenty of demonstration of music examples and riffs each week that will come with PDFs and tabs.

These musical examples will range from classical, folk, rock, blues, bluegrass, country, jazz, grunge and popular movie scores. It will be super fun and very exciting! I hope it gives you a whole new outlook to looping while increasing your musicianship and guitar playing.

Another aspect of this workshop will be some improvisation. If this is new for you, I will be walking you through the basics: pentatonic/blue scales, major scales, and some other ideas on rhythms and creating cool textures to the music by layering.

Expect to learn a lot while having fun! Hope you can join me on this very special workshop series!

You’ll be sent a nice, slow, clean recording of each song (by yours truly) plus chords and lyrics to work out your part, whether that is rhythm or bass guitar, voice, keyboards, guitar/horn/harmonica solos, etc. You will have the opportunity to share what you have come up with with the group (i.e., short “zoom” performances) if you choose, and get positive support and how to be an even better player/singer. This class will help you emerge prepared for the post-Covid music jam days to come!

Sponsored by the Berkeley Old Time Music Convention, it will be on Zoom every Friday from 4-5:00 pm Pacific Standard Time. Each week will have different amazing leaders. All tunes will be led by the leaders, so it won’t be a round robin like some jams you might be used to. The definition of “slow” will be left to the discretion of the leaders.

Here’s our initial lineup. Be prepared not to be bored! It will be free, but tips to the leaders are encouraged. Hope you’ll join us.

May 14 - Judy Hyman and Jeff Claus
May 21 - Harry and Cindy Liedstand
May 28 - Adam Hurt and Beth Williams Hartness

Artichoke Community Music online class led by Martha Stone, $100 for six classes.

You‘re going to need a 5 string banjo, electronic tuner, capo, and music stand. No experience is necessary. We will use tablature at the beginning, but you do not need to read music to play clawhammer banjo.

Clawhammer refers to a rhythm which originates from a right-hand technique (aka Bum Ditty) and is the hardest part about playing this style of banjo. Once you get it (let’s say Day 1), the rest is much easier! Hopefully, your ultimate goal is to go to a jam and play clawhammer. We will be focusing on the skills you need to play with other musicians in a jam setting.

Martha is offering this class on-line. Details for participating in the class will be provided by the teacher before the class begins...

Since the late 1960s a uniquely Irish version of the Greek bouzouki has become commonplace in traditional music far beyond Ireland and the British Isles. At the same time, interest in other larger mandolin-family instruments like the octave mandolin or the cittern (usually with 10 strings) has increased all over the world. This class is for any 8 string octave mandolin or bouzouki that can be tuned GDAD. We will explore chords and scales, counter-point and harmony, talk about the main modes used in traditional music and focus on how to utilize the unique multi-string tone and texture of the OM/Bouzouki to your best advantage. No previous background in the instrument required.
