Do you love the ukulele? Want to play and learn with the best? Then the Menucha Ukulele Band Camp is for you. You can‘t catch the virus through the computer, but you can catch the excitement and connection with others through the music shared online.

Using the technology available to us, we‘ll bring the magic of Menucha Ukulele Band Camp to you. Classes, open mic, jams, social events, virtual tours and some things we haven‘t even dreamed up yet!

For 10 years Ukulele Band Camp has brought joy, laughter and merry music-making to our 102 acres in the Columbia River Gorge. In 2021, we‘re going to bring all that to your house, and hopefully all over the world! Since we‘re not limited by space, bring lots of your ukulele-playing friends. Everyone gets a front-row seat for classes, you can noodle all the way through class (as long as you‘re on mute!) and no one can hear you! We‘ll record the classes so you can revisit them.

2021 Faculty: Cathy Fink and Marcy Marxer, the Canote Brothers, Kevin Carroll, Aaron Keim, Nicole Keim, Matt Weiner, Nova Devonie

Artistic Directors: Nicole & Aaron Keim. Registration will begin in February!

Led by Dan Compton, $100 for six classes. For advanced beginners on up.

In this class we’ll learn some new and old tunes and delve into the nuances of bowing and ornamentation that make Irish fiddle what it is. We’ll look at ways of using the bow in polkas, jigs, reels and hornpipes – and how each tune type has its own pattern of accents that make us want to bow it a certain way. We’ll also explore all the ornaments used in Irish fiddle: left-hand ornaments like rolls and cuts, as well as ornaments executed with the bow. We’ll also look into how ornamentation affects bowing … or is it the other way around? Along the way we’ll also explore technical aspects of fiddle playing, especially bowing technique, intonation, and drawing on the fiddle’s resonance. Recordings and tune transcriptions provided.

We are starting up in-person sing arounds, but Golden Link will still be hosting virtual sing-arounds on Zoom.

Virtual sing arounds actually provide some advantages over in-person sing arounds as well. We‘ve seen participation from people around the United States and around the world. Even for people who live close by, sometimes travel to our in-person sing arounds can be an impediment to attending, especially on work nights. So, due to the success of the current Zoom sing arounds, we plan to continue the virtual sing arounds in addition to the in-person sing arounds even when things return to normal. This would allow many more people to participate than we see in our in-person sing arounds.

This will be a unique online workshop, led by Tracy Kim, $120 for four workshops.Drop-ins are welcome at $35 per class. Contact Tracy.

For the past year, due to Covid, many of my students have purchased loop pedals. This online live workshop is specifically designed for you and your loop pedal!

This is an online class via Zoom. You will receive a link and password along with materials prior to first class from Tracy. For all levels, however, basic guitar experience is recommended.

Whether it’s jamming on some 12 bar blues, folk rock, jazz, or just a riff, it’s been quite fun to share some ideas relating looping.

Using a loop pedal can be extremely fun and educational. However, there’s a slight learning curve and I’ll share some tips, plenty of demonstration of music examples and riffs each week that will come with PDFs and tabs.

These musical examples will range from classical, folk, rock, blues, bluegrass, country, jazz, grunge and popular movie scores. It will be super fun and very exciting! I hope it gives you a whole new outlook to looping while increasing your musicianship and guitar playing.

Another aspect of this workshop will be some improvisation. If this is new for you, I will be walking you through the basics: pentatonic/blue scales, major scales, and some other ideas on rhythms and creating cool textures to the music by layering.

Expect to learn a lot while having fun! Hope you can join me on this very special workshop series!

LIMITED TO 8 STUDENTS - Students must be vaccinated, masks optional. Rainy days, we will meet on line. Artichoke Community Music online class led by Anne Weiss, $20 weekly drop-in. Become a better player—all instruments/voices/levels. All you need to know is basic chords, or you can know a lot!

In this class we will take one new blues and one new folk song per week, listen carefully together and figure out what to work on and how to work on it to become a better player! You’ll be sent a nice, slow, clean recording of each song (by yours truly) plus chords and lyrics to work out your part, whether that is rhythm or bass guitar, voice, keyboards, guitar/horn/harmonica solos, etc. You will have the opportunity to share what you have come up with with the group (i.e., short “zoom” performances) if you choose, and get positive support and how to be an even better player/singer. This class will help you emerge prepared for the post-Covid music jam days to come!

Sponsored by the Berkeley Old Time Music Convention, it will be on Zoom every Friday from 5:30-6:30 pm Pacific Standard Time. Each week will have different amazing leaders. All tunes will be led by the leaders, so it won’t be a round robin like some jams you might be used to. The definition of “slow” will be left to the discretion of the leaders.

Here’s the latest lineup. Be prepared not to be bored! It will be free, but tips to the leaders are encouraged. Hope you’ll join us.
