Uilleann piper Preston Howard Wilde leads an Irish piping session - it’s a wonderful way to spend a Sunday afternoon!

On Sunday afternoons, the Hostel Café in Portland, Oregon provides a friendly setting for this TrailJams Irish traditional tune session. TrailJams is a music community focused on making acoustic music together outside for the enjoyment of the musicians and of people passing by. The cozy café makes a great place to keep the music going in the winter. In better weather, the tune playing moves out to the café’s courtyard. Guests of the Hostel Café and the adjoining Northwest Portland Hostel are likely to settle at one of the nearby tables to enjoy the music.

Soldier Songs and Voices provides free songwriting workshops and guitar and voice instruction to veterans of all eras. We believe that everyone has a story to tell and that telling it in song is a path to a happier and healthier life. Loaner guitars are available. We will work on rhythmic competence, strumming techniques, singing while playing, basic finger picking, simple melodies, and basic music theory. All that sounds a bit fancy, but my goal is to help you develop your musicality and confidence playing songs you enjoy. We will do a combination of review/new songs and skills each week. I supplement our lessons using a google classroom with videos, source recordings, and chord charts.

We ask that you are vaccinated and current on your boosters to attend class. We do not require masking, but it is encouraged and welcomed if you feel compromised in any way. Should someone in class have a positive test within three days of class meeting we will notify everyone. We will follow CDC guidelines and will require masking or pivot to Zoom classes should we be required to do so.

This is a class for folks who have worked on basic guitar skills, want to stay inspired and also be challenged with new concepts and skills. In this class we will work with all of the basic chord shapes and we will stretch into bar chords, bass runs, simple melodies, fills, finger picking, and sometimes complex rhythms to make your songs more dynamic. If you enjoy making music with other people in a relaxed setting and want to get a weekly work out and stretch a bit, this is the class for you.We will do a combination of review/new songs and skills each week. I supplement our lessons using a google classroom with videos, source recordings, and chord charts.

The Everyone Welcome Community Choir is a non-audition singing class and choir rolled into one, where the number one reason for returning is FUN. Led by Anne Weiss, $140 for seven weeks or $30 drop-in. Register at the Artichoke Music website using the link below.

At our weekly singaround, you can perform a song to the rest of the group, just as you would in a regular folk club, or you can just join and listen to some live music. Tunes and poems are welcome too. When it’s your turn to perform, everyone else is muted on Zoom so that everyone can hear you.

An all-acoustic, boot-stompin‘ band featuring a mean banjo and a rockin‘ guitar - throw in more strings, some brass, and a washboard, free, all ages.

If you’ve been playing old-time music on fiddle, clawhammer banjo, or guitar for a while and are ready to build your repertoire while meeting and playing with other people, then this class is for you! We meet for 8 weeks and learn 6 traditional tunes and songs. We start each lesson in a large group and the instructors play the tune we will work on that evening. Then, we slow it down and all sing the melody together to learn it by ear. We separate into different classrooms for group lessons on each instrument. Finally, we come back together and play the tune all together.

On the fourth meeting, we work specifically on reviewing the first three tunes and harmony singing. For the final class meeting, we will meet early for a big community dinner (COVID permitting) and will play all the tunes we have learned during the session. In addition to the class meetings, enrolled students will receive access to source recordings and demonstration videos for each of the tunes we teach.

Take advantage of the weekly lesson for beginners and then stay for the dance ‘til 9:30. Instructors rotate weekly and each brings their own curated playlist of classic and contemporary zydeco and Cajun music. Zydeco, two-step, waltz, blues, swing.

Tony Becker of San Jose, California and Mark Wallis of Gloucester, England host this Transatlantic session for all interested parties on Wednesdays at 8:00 PM UK time. For American visitors, please note we are now all on standard ‘winter‘ time, so that is 12:00 PM Pacific in the USA.

Open to all who play traditional Irish music and It has the obvious limitations of Zoom in that only one musician can play at a time. But we go round the ‘room’ and take it in turns - no pressure though and the baton can be passed if you just want to listen. We just play for a couple of hours.

On a good day we have a variety of instruments from pipes to Melodeon, banjo to fiddle and it can be a good way to pick up tunes. It is very friendly and we welcome everyone. The only criterion is we try to stick to Irish traditional.

Learn jazz standards through easy arrangements for violin. This class is for beginner-intermediate violin players who want to expand their repertoire by playing some of the most beloved jazz standards in a supportive group setting.
Ability to read music or learn by ear is required.

Mask Policy:
PCDC has authorized committees to make decisions about masking policies for their own events. All contra dances are mask-optional at this time.

COVID Policy:
PCDC no longer requires proof of vaccination, but we continue to encourage everyone to be vaccinated. While currently available COVID-19 vaccines no longer do much to prevent transmission, they continue to be effective for protecting oneself from more serious illness.

Known for his sense and skill as a sought-after accompanist in the city‘s vibrant traditional music communities, he is also a prolific teacher, performer, and producer. Eliot Grasso (uilleann pipes, flute, tin whistle), has taught, performed, and recorded throughout North America and Europe for over two decades and is a founding member of the Celtic ensemble Dréos.

Tony Furtado Acoustic Band with Buffalo Kin and featuring special guests Scott Law, Stephanie Schneiderman & Love, DEAN, $25, 21+ (doors open at 7 pm). Tony is an evocative and soulful singer, a wide-ranging songwriter and a virtuoso multi-instrumentalist adept on banjo, cello-banjo, slide guitar and baritone ukulele who mixes and matches sounds and styles with the flair of a master chef (he’s also an accomplished sculptor, but that’s another story).

Uilleann piper Preston Howard Wilde leads an Irish piping session - it’s a wonderful way to spend a Sunday afternoon!

We are excited to host Portland Bluegrass Sunday Jam every 2nd and 4th Sundays (and 5th when it happens) at Artichoke, $5 cover at the door.

This is a live, in-person, and open Bluegrass jam from 1:30-4:30 pm. Acoustic only please, and all levels of experience welcome.

PLEASE NOTE: This week the jam will take place in the CAFÉ.

How Long Jug Band at Oakshire Brewing - every Fourth Sunday. Inspired by the great jug bands of the 1920’s and 30’s, the How Long Jug Band blends kazoos, washboards and jugs seamlessly with conventional guitars, mandolins and banjos, free.

While they sometimes slip a modern song into the mix, the How Longs mostly draw from early blues, ragtime and jazz, digging into obscure songs to find lyrics and arrangements that are too good to be forgotten.

Oakshire is open till 10 pm and serves pizza, salads and snacks. Outside food is still welcome. There‘s also a food cart on site and a couple more nearby. Kid and dog friendly.
