On Sunday afternoons, the Hostel Café in Portland, Oregon provides a friendly setting for this TrailJams Irish traditional tune session. TrailJams is a music community focused on making acoustic music together outside for the enjoyment of the musicians and of people passing by. The cozy café makes a great place to keep the music going in the winter. In better weather, the tune playing moves out to the café’s courtyard. Guests of the Hostel Café and the adjoining Northwest Portland Hostel are likely to settle at one of the nearby tables to enjoy the music.

Larry and Audrey are a Boston based traditional duo who play contra dances and concerts.

Guitar and banjo player Larry Unger and fiddler Audrey Knuth are a Boston based traditional duo who play exhilarating tunes with driving rhythms. Their concerts feature American and Celtic tunes with elements of other traditions including swing and blues. They also draw from Larry’s catalog of original fiddle tunes, which have been featured in several of Ken Burns’ documentaries. Declared a “guitar genius” by Sing Out Magazine, Larry Unger joins fiddler Audrey Knuth for an unforgettable evening full of stirring musical experiences.

COVID Policy:

Led by René Berblinger, learn how to hold, tune and pick the mandolin with basic chords and tablature, $120 for six classes.

Beginning Mandolin will cover:
A. How to tune the mandolin
B. How to hold pick and utilize various right hand picking patterns.
C. How to read tablature and chord diagrams.
D. Open position chords and strums for accompaniment of songs and back up.
E. Open position pentatonic scale patterns useful in playing traditional fiddle tunes, blues, blue grass and improvisation.

The course will be designed and tailored based upon registrants to make sure you learn what you need in the next step of your journey to master the mandolin. You are welcome to take both the beginning and continuing class or just take one or the other...

Topics may cover and focus on any one of the following topics:

A. Learning to read music notation on the mandolin.
B. Closed position chords and back-up including some basic understanding of chord structures and patterns.
C. More advanced right and left hand techniques.
D. Scale patterns in open and movable positions.
E. Build tune repertoire in various styles including Celtic, traditional American folk and Bach or anything you bring!

“We’re encouraging masking although not requiring it knowing that the new variants are highly transmissible, it’s being compared to measles. Vaccines are playing very little in the spread or prevention but decrease the severity of the illness. From what we’re reading, BA.4 &BA.5 are the big concern now. Looks like it‘s predicted to peak in mid to late July”.

We are hosting an unusual (for us) and interesting house concert with Chris Miles, one of the important voices in Scottish traditional music, in our home on October 7. We hope you can come.
Free, and there will be a basket for donations.

Chris Miles performs all over Scotland and Ireland, at festivals, clubs and pubs. She is an organizer of the respected Fife Traditional Singing Festival in Falkland, Fife. Our friend Casey Casebeer, who is helping Chris organize her time in the US, has this to say about Chris: "Chris has a low, vibrant voice and a huge collection of songs at her command. You’ll hear Scottish and Irish traditional songs, ballads, maybe a bawdy Robert Burns, or a contemporary anti-war song…you never know what her extraordinary repertoire will produce. She will be accompanied by the crisp and nuanced guitar of Gearaidh (Gary) Matthews of Drogheda, Ireland".

Covid - oh that again. We are tired of it too. Life has to go on but it's still a nasty disease even for those who are fully vaccinated. Join us for an inventive and fun evening featuring multi-instrumentalist Rob Flax who describes his music in a concise way: “I play things with strings, I hit stuff, and I sing.” Behind this simple tag line lies a rich depth of genre-bending, from classical and jazz violin to bluegrass fiddle, to blues and rock influences, and beyond. In his “One Man Band” shows, Rob uses a looper pedal and other effects to transform his violin into an entire symphony of sounds.
