Online class led by Mary Flower, part of Lunch & Learn winter series.

Guitarists will come away from this class with a wider understanding of what makes the blues authentic and playable. Mary will demonstrate 8 and 12 bar forms and players will learn tunes in the Delta and Piedmont styles. Delta uses a monotonic bass (also called “dead thumb”) and Piedmont styles uses alternating bass. Mary will touch on turn arounds, shuffle patterns and discuss how to get around in different keys and open tunings. This is an ambitious class description! We shall attempt to cover all the bases and give players a wide understanding of what’s under the blues umbrella.

We are starting up in-person sing arounds, but Golden Link will still be hosting virtual sing-arounds on Zoom.

Virtual sing arounds actually provide some advantages over in-person sing arounds as well. We‘ve seen participation from people around the United States and around the world. Even for people who live close by, sometimes travel to our in-person sing arounds can be an impediment to attending, especially on work nights. So, due to the success of the current Zoom sing arounds, we plan to continue the virtual sing arounds in addition to the in-person sing arounds even when things return to normal. This would allow many more people to participate than we see in our in-person sing arounds.

Jan 15 (Tue): virtual sing around, Leader: David Russell
Jan 22 (Tue): virtual sing around, Leader: Janice Hanson

Led by Maggie Lind (clawhammer banjo), Patrick Lind (guitar), and Sophie Enloe (fiddle). Previous experience on your instrument is required. If you are playing in the fiddle or banjo sections, you should be fairly comfortable picking out melody notes by ear but we are working on developing this skill as well. Guitarists should be familiar with the following open position chords: A, C, D, E, F, G and able to play the bass note/after strum or “boom chuck” technique.

Cost for the 8 week session is sliding scale $160 – $125 per student. If you choose to skip the group zoom lessons you may have access to the online portion of the fall session for $80. Please email Maggie to register.

Pay what you can afford and email maggiebanjo (at) gmail.com if you have financial need. We offer scholarships and we want our classes to be accessible to all. We are happy for you to share one registration fee per household during this time, especially if you are financially impacted by the pandemic. If you would like to contribute a little extra money to support students that can’t pay full price, please let us know or simply add it to your registration fee. Thank you!

Every Wednesday, John hosts a free, live “Taking Time” slow session on Zoom. The session starts at 4pm Pacific time/7pm Eastern/midnight GMT, and regularly draws attendees from around the world.

Players and listeners of all levels are very welcome to enjoy playing or hearing favorite tunes at a comfortable tempo, along with the all-important warmth of connection that shared music brings into our lives, even — or rather, especially — now.

This is also a great opportunity for learning new tunes, as everybody but the session leader (John) will be muted while they play. Unlike an in-person session you can noodle along to your heart’s content, and nobody will ever know unless you tell them.

John sends out the Zoom link and tune list to his newsletter subscribers every week, usually on Tuesday evening (Pacific time), so please make sure to sign up for his email newsletter so you can join in.
